Description Looks like we've just caught Frederick's foster-brother Cedric as he's sitting down to a... what? ...second breakfast? He loves his food!

Another drawing from me using traditional media... only this time a mini-scene rather than just a headshot or something!
Coloured using pencils and pens.

Heya Dan, thought I'd give a more in-depth review of one of my favorite members of your growing cast of characters, and allow me to cast out in this in-depth review of this rotund otter here.

Vision) Aparently it's obvious how much he loves fish regardless of his current figure here, he may be fit as a fiddle but if you ask me he's as fit as a bass fiddle. As far as this picture goes, it's clear that someone or himself fixed himself a 2nd breakfast (do people eat two breakfast meals?) and it looks rather big, and yet he looks mighty hungry, if not...gluttonous.

Originality) Well it's a fat character having another meal? I dunno how original can you be?

Technique) Ah, now here's where it gets to the meat and veggies in this illustration here. With your use of colored pencils, it clearly shows both the materials of all objects, ranging from the wooden table, the fish, and his fur. Although there's a lot of "whitening" on Cedric's fur to really effective, you did do a decent job coloring him in with this particular medium.

Overall Impact) Im giving this picture 4 stars here. No doubt that right after I finish this review and Cedric finishes his 2nd breakfast, he'd probably want to have some tea to go with it and then have a very long nap. But this picture is a real nice peek into the daily lives of one of your other characters then your main cast and, did I mention I always liked Cedric? He may be a bit of a goofball, and a glutton but he does have a soft heart to go with that soft belly too.

Closing Comments) As far as using colored pencils go, I would be very careful on making too long of strokes, otherwise you'll develop the whitening that appears sporadic in the image as well as some bleeding effects, like near Cedric's mouth and tongue. I'd also recommend to keep your pencils sharpened to a fine tip to get into the nitty gritty angles and curves, like the fur here.

Hmm, come to think of it, Cedric's bulk could use a bit of work because as he sits, his belly and other areas where the fat compresses should also sag a bit. I could help you with this privately if you want. Although, there is one thing on my mind, actually a couple questions

1) Will there be any leftovers?
2) What kind of fish is that anyway? Looks like a trout
3) May I have a piece? I love fish!

Heh, thanks very much, Alex!
Glad you like it!

Heh, indeed... for a fat guy, at least Cedric still has a certain fitness that constant swimming imparts to him! I'd consider his physical condition as very much a musclegut! (Still, guess a bit of belly makes him all the more cuddly)
Indeed, he's quite the lovable goofball. They're all rather fond of him, and he really embraces (sometimes literally) the role of Frederick's brother even if he's only adopted...

That's certainly the one downside to pencils, though... try as I might, even applying two coats to the fill-areas, there still seem to be some white areas that get missed somehow... hence I wanted to use pens more for colouring certain areas as eyes and clothing...
(And I used first lighter then darker browns to colour the fur and table)
Hmmm, and yes... I still get the odd trouble with the ink pens bleeding outside the lines, however lightly I try to dab in the colour. Either the paper's too absorbent, or the ink flows too copiously...

Yeah, maybe a few pointers... I was really trying to work on getting Cedric's belly right. It's not always easy to draw an animal like an otter that's supposed to have a long body and shortish limbs, but is also practically circular in terms of being a butterball...

As for those questions...
1) Cedric: Leftovers? Sure, when I've finished, you could always have the bones to boil in a fish-soup!
2) No specific fish, really... whenever I draw anything aquatic, it tends to be very generic...
3) Well... depends if there's still one lying around in the larder that Cedric hasn't got at yet...

I don't think Cedric's the only one who loves his food. I think I'm the same way, except I don't know if I would like to help myself to a "second breakfast".

Yup, there's certainly no doubt about Cedric's big appetite!

Cedric: Did somebody mention a sec'nd bre'kfist?

Cute drawing, Give the food descriptions in the Red Wall series I would imagine it's hard not to overindulge a bit in that world.Β

Yeah, Brian Jacques sure gave a lot of time to describing food... depending on whether I had just eaten or not was the difference between making me hungry or nauseous...
Though I don't see what a reference to the Redwall series has to do with Cedric Wilkinson and his love for eating...?

DCLeadboot In reply to Zaphkiellane [2017-02-23 14:29:20 +0000 UTC]

Well, my earliest influences may have come from Redwall, but that was some 15 years ago. Since then I've sought to break away from that by placing Danbuster and friends in their own reality, based on an anthropomorphic version of contemporary United Kingdom!

OK, I was thinking it was a later time in Β that worlds timeline when it had advanced to resemble the present by convergence.Β

DCLeadboot In reply to Zaphkiellane [2017-02-24 08:13:18 +0000 UTC]

I dunno, maybe it is, considering Redwall was set in a very British-like climate... or maybe it's like a parallel universe where contemporary furries can visit in fan-fiction, only to find that their favourite characters still live in a medieval stasis...
