Description
Meet the Kaynoids, a benevolent race of alien cube-dogs!An advanced and sentient species, the Kaynoids
originate from the distant Kayoob (Codename K9) in the “Dog Star” Sirius star system. This is a most peculiar cube-shaped planet on which all the flora and fauna strangely grows entirely in straight edges, hence their boxy shapes (unlike on Earth, where everything naturally grows in curves)
Despite their odd look, the Kaynoids are intelligent and technologically advanced, having long since mastered deep-space travel in their exploration of the local Milky Way galaxy and its outer reaches, and even established outlying colonies where they might study all the secrets of the galaxy.
While their advances have gained them some friendly contacts and trade agreements with other sentient life on other planets, they have also run into the occasional conflicts too – the chief of which is marauding bands of fishy-freaks known as the Tricods; an evil race of war-hungry space-pirates, whose mechs continue to be an ongoing threat to any who cross their path!
Due to the threat brought about by the Tricods, the Kaynoids have had to militarise their colonies against the threat of invasion and extend space station outposts to defend both their home planet Kayoob and other local inhabited planets – including our planet Earth, which is a mere 8.6 lightyears from Sirius!
The Kaynoids are well aware of “intelligent life” on Earth, but are also savvy of the warlike nature of humans. For this reason, they keep Earth at arm's length, as is Kaynoid policy for any primitive species. Until a race is considered advanced enough to be of reasonable benefit in trade and peace talks, they will otherwise leave them to their own devices, but continue to monitor them and protect them from outside threats if possible. Ignorance is bliss.

One thing's for sure, these canine aliens may look like squares, but they sure aren't squares, if you get what I mean. Very quirky and interesting design indeed, with an in-depth backstory to boot.

Heh, heh... thanks very much, Mark!
Indeed, they're certainly not behind the times - especially not compared to humanity...
As was being established in this space-travel RP with Alex, where they've been getting some development after the Dan Clan meet up with them, they've VERY advanced.
True, they were stuck with using square wheels for many cycles. It fell out in conversation that they still had square wheels as late as their Medieval era, along with close-quarter weapons and steam-powered droids.
It was in their Industrial Age that they mastered space travel - this was born out of necessity, as their mining of precious minerals unfortunately started drawing the covetous eyes of the Tricods. As such, the Industrial Age of the Kaynoids brought about plasma-based firearms and spaceships, as well as octagonal wheels which roll better.
Their travels to other worlds soon led to the discovery of curved shapes, such as an early reconnaissance to the nearby Earth - although pretty much the only beings there that they could establish contact with were dogs, whose language is similar to their own... if more primitive.
Even before the discovery of round wheels, they had a vague understanding of curved shapes from the roundness of their sun Sirius, on which they based their "circles and curves" alphabet.

they do have that retro 3D look about them which do look very interesting. At first I was wondering if you took inspiration from Dire Strait's 'Money for Nothing' music video. www.youtube.com/watch?v=wTP2RU…
Great job, Dan.

Heh, thanks very much, Luke!
Interesting video!
Must admit, this was an old concept I was bringing back from years ago, long before I heard of Minecraft too!
It was more along the lines of this unique character from the Land of Oz book series - a cube-shaped one-of-a-kind creature called the Woozy... though that creature was hairless and perhaps more catlike, its main part in the story being that it had three long stiff hairs on its tail required for a restorative potion recipe for relatives of the protagonist, accidentally turned to stone by a spilled potion. However, the Woozy was so thick-skinned that they were unable to remove the hairs... and anyway, by the end Glinda the Good was able to offer an alternative and much-simpler reversal spell.

Everybody seems to make that reference, although really my old concept for this idea went way back before I even heard of it. Actually, I was more inspired by the boxy Woozy character from the Land of Oz story series...

There are a lot of "blocky" characters in fiction, mostly cheesy robots, but the design here just reminds me a lot of Minecraft character models.

Yeah, the similarity is there, if coincidental...
I do point out of course, these guys are completely organic. On their planet, everything grows in straight lines... even down to their stiff soft silky fur.

They're so cute. But this race of Kaynoids sounds pretty interesting. I can certainly understand them wanting to keep Earth at arm's length. ^^

Thanks very much, Kel!
Yeah, it I was an alien from another planet, I should be very wary of humans too...
I certainly wanted to get away from the idea of yet another alien race that, having alleged destroyed every other inhabited planet between here and doomsday, will then invade Earth and get easily defeated by humans... I was thinking more along the lines of a friendly class of alien like Klaatu, who would try to make civilised contact but be happy to just let Earth be.
Or in the context of an ongoing RP between me and AlexRaccoonGlider , the Kaynoids are a saving grace who will help Danbuster and his friends find their way home, having found themselves lost in space courtesy of Retsubnad trying to "put them out of the way" of his world domination plans...
These two Kaynoids here (named by me) are supporting characters leading the survivors of a Task Force whom Dan and Alex and co rescue from a holding cell whilst raiding a Tricod outpost.

You're very welcome! Smart thinking, if you ask me. ^^
*snerk* Hah, yeah, another smart move, avoiding that old cliche. I'm not familiar with Klaatu, but I prefer that kind of alien race to the other kind. Glad the Kaynoids get to help out the Dan Clan, though.
Sounds cool.

Indeed... though a study of the local fauna would be interesting... I love animals!
Yeah, we watched The Day the Earth Stood Still (the old Michael Rennie version) in University one day on my Digital Media course, studying the way the message was conveyed. Klaatu was a spaceman who came to visit Earth to warn them against their nuclear armament and continued warlike ways - only dealing nervous American soldiers and government officials, he had his work cut out for him... especially after he arranges for all electricity around the world to be blacked out for one hour (cars, appliances, everything - except hospital gear and planes in flight). No more than a demonstration of power, this is taken as hostile intent by the paranoid government.
After dressing in normal clothes and taking the alias "Mr Carpenter", he interacts with some locals, getting to know some ordinary people with whom he is eventually able to confide in and (with the help of a local Albert-Einstein-like character) arranges a meeting with the world's top scientists to deliver his ultimatum before leaving.
Yup - I haven't yet seen how this RP will continue, but so far their tired spaceship has been guided into a local Kaynoid space station outpost where they can meet one of their leaders and hopefully get help - including food, which is in short supply.

Animals are pretty cool.
Huh. Doesn't really sound like my kind of movie, mostly because I hate plots where the government is so paranoid, war/problem-mongering and useless... I mean, it's bad enough it's like that in real life.
A space station that's like a gas station, eh? That sounds cute.

Indeed they are!
Yeah, political satire all the time... ;;
Well, considering a space station is like a forward-base of operations, they're bound to cater to any convenience that their own personnel would need.
Of course, it's a good job Einspine has a universal translator device, otherwise all they'd hear is a lot of yapping and barking, which would be incomprehensible to everyone - except maybe Heinrich Schäferhund.
