DCLeadboot — Krakatoa is puzzled

Description Krakatoa seems a little confused by something... I don't know what...
One possibility could be not knowing with certainty what he actually is.
It's accepted by many, including Hydrex and Pearl his masters, that he's a young Kraken of some sort - young, because he's very much smaller than most Krakens previously heard of (notably, Davy Jones' Kraken was a great deal larger)

It also seems possible that he may be a form of giant squid - but not of the usual known species of today. Recently, while we were watching a few of our Christian-based Creationist videos (discussing evidence for Creation vs Evolution), I learned of a form of extinct squid known as the Nautiloid.
Now this was some old cephalopod-creature with a shell - sort of armadillos of the sea, if you like - believed to have existed either millions of years ago (according to the Evolution model)... or only thousands of years (if you believe in Creation).
Anyway, many well-preserved fossils of such creatures are found scattered indiscriminately in the sediments of the Grand Canyon (and other places too, I'm sure) ... the random locations of the fossils and Canyon itself are considered by Creationists to be monument to the Biblical Flood of Noah.

But to return to the point of Krakatoa, this discovery perhaps makes him wonder if the Kraken-species he is part of may be more Nautiloid than just plain squid due to the unusual articulated spiny shell that he possesses.

*Krakatoa looks strangely at Cliff - signs: points to Cliff, mimics otter, makes small ear shape*
Hydrex: He says, "You, all ears? You're an otter! You've got very small ears!"

Hydrex: Ah well, if we can all study on it together...
Pearl: Though, of course, remembering that we tend to think in terms of the Creationist view - and therefore the belief that nautiloids and krakens may be related species and could even still exist in the uncharted depths...

Hydrex: Ah, no problem! Protect the innocent, by all means!
Pearl: Ha! Heck, our artist doesn't even give the exact longitude/latitude of Hawkcrag - only that it's in the Grumpian mountains!
Hydrex: He also believes there's a haven-island out there for dragons, dinosaurs and other "extinct" species - but again, that's somewhere that can't be found except by those who know where it is!

raletheotter In reply to DCLeadboot [2010-05-04 13:05:50 +0000 UTC]

It's a song about the giant squid, (more technically called the "architeuthis"), and how we know it does actually exist, from all accounts of it, both ancient and modern, though we've never seen a live one. The song parallels that with how we know that God exists, from both His Work in creation, His Revelation to man, and His Work inside the hearts of men, though we've never seen Him.

DCLeadboot In reply to raletheotter [2010-05-04 22:16:17 +0000 UTC]

OK. Hmm, finding the song on YouTube, though... not really my style - far too heavy for my taste, and not enough of a good tune or arrangement to keep me listening. I had to cut it off after a couple of minutes.

When it comes to kraken themes, I'd tend to fall back on this for inspiration: [link] or Davy's Jones organ-music.

Yeah, he's certainly one of the best ones! Done a lot of soundtracks, it seems, including The Lion King.
He even had some practice at pirating music when he composed the score for Muppet Treasure Island!

I also really like Jerry Goldsmith, who has done stuff for tons and tons of films. Also of course Danny Elfman's music is always fantastic, always when I think of Batman will think of his batman theme.

Great work on the pic!

He does look a bit like a type of Nautiloid, yet (I think) they have a bit longer shell. I believe he's most definitely a Kraken. (Several descriptions of them describe them as being "crab-like") Yet he could just be wondering about anything in general, such as "What's for lunch?"

And of course, as far as bad guys are concerned, Krakatoa need only be a scare-factor. He probably wouldn't cause anybody real harm unless he was told to - or if someone made him angry (like they tried wounding him or any of his friends)
One of those old Three Laws things - I'm not into Asimov by any stretch, but like his Laws of Robotics, Krakatoa is told to obey three basic principals:
1. To avoid bringing serious harm to people, if possible.
2. To protect and obey his masters, within reason.
3. Self defence is permitted.
Of course, if the circumstances are extenuating, these guidelines can be stretched a little...

Interesting, that's similar to the way our dog Sam used to be, all bark and no bite. I believe I have heard of the Three Laws, yet I'm not familiar with Asimov... That's it! The film I, Robot , may be based off of the Laws.
Yet, rules are made to be broken.

DCLeadboot In reply to AlizeraSong [2010-05-05 10:26:20 +0000 UTC]

Ah well, Dad used to read some of those - and I only really know of the Three Laws through Wikipedia.
Never touches the books these days, though... Asimov wasn't only a sci-fi novelist, he was also an atheist and Evolutionist - kind of the opposite of what we are as a family.

Barbossa: The Code is more like what ye'd call "guidelines" th'n actual "rules"! Welcome aboard the Black Pearl!

AlizeraSong In reply to DCLeadboot [2010-05-05 22:15:53 +0000 UTC]

Wikipedia is the greastest source of info, period. I haven't read any of his works, and I doubt I will, sci-fi is neat in movies, but it's difficult to picture it in books. And I can understand your point, I myself follow the Christan faith, but my views are a bit mixed on evolution and the like.

*snickers* Gotta love those movies...
