Description
Over the years, I have made many versions of the Commonwealth Class Explorer. I consider it my primary Star Trek inspired design. Some of the versions of the Commonwealth have been set in alternate Star Trek universes while others have been set in Star Trek analog universes. This final version of the Commonwealth Class Explorer is the successor to my version of the Constitution Class Explorer presented in 2018.Like the Constitution Class, it is the largest example of long-range, long-duration exploration vessel in its era. It has approximately the same capabilities as the Galaxy Class Explorer of Star Trek canon. As with the Galaxy Class, there are only a handful of Commonwealth Class vessels and they serve as flagships of Star Fleet. A significant number of the personnel accommodated aboard Commonwealth Class starships are spouses and children of the crew making the ships traveling scientific research colonies.

I really like the simplicity of this design.
It looks elegant and sleek, but majestic at the same time, just as i like it!

This design alone is X times better than 99% what Star Trek online designers have released in 10 years.

I must say over the years, i have been thinking about creating a unique Star Trek timeline, or a different sci fi Setting with roughly similar technology. The problem is that i'm terrible at writing stories, lol.
So i had the fixed idea of creating a Pen&Paper RPG for one person to play.
Creating the setting would be the easy part, but how do you create a game mechanic (with dice and tables) that creates enough outside input so the game becomes more than just a monologue? I never got around that problem.
Anyways, i really enjoy seeing someone creating his own version of a positive Star Trek -esque future scenario, even better if it includes beautiful looking Starships.

I don't consider myself an artist, but i always get the impression that the designers of STO would rather make something else that Star Trek or that they deliberately add certain elements that make their ship designs (how do i say that..) "less" good looking.
Sure, that's just my personal impression, but there's is often (not to say always) some element on their Starfleet ships, that makes it look unbalanced (most of the time nacelles that look too big) or right out ugly (like an enginnering hull placed directly under the saucer, like their TOS ships, or their Starfleet Miracle Cruisers for example).
For instance, their Starfleet Heavy destroyer (a ship you get when you buy a lifetime account for 200$) would look realy good, but the engineering hull is placed almost directly under the saucer...
IF it was more to the rear on the other hand, the ship would look way better in my opinion. Seeing that, i simply cannot understand why a designer would do that in the first place. Maybe they thought it would look less boring to them, but make it more ugly to counter it? Wasn't there no other way to make it more interesting, and have it look good? I'm probably interpreting too much into it, but things like that really bother me.
Maybe i shouldn't speak out criticism like that, because these designers often work under heavy time pressure and i am myself often afflicted by OCD when it comes to Star Trek ships. But i just refuse to buy or fly (not even if it's for free) most of those designs. Having one of those designs in front of me all the time, is like an itching that you cannot scratch. (I know this sounds crazy, lol)

Funny you mention the nacelle must not be blocked rule. To me it is the only official rule i think that makes maybe some sense, but is really not helping in creating good looking ships.
Just from a design point of view, i think if the nacelles and saucer are on one plane, it looks automatily much better than having an offset. (that's just my personal opinion.)
I think it began with the movie Aliens, when Spaceships started to look like huge guns and many people found that cool (not me btw.). It seems to me that many designers these days don't have enough much
confidense in their own designs so they add tons of little details on
their ships until you can't even see a general shape. In the end many
ships look like flying heaps of scrap metal, which is pretty sad in my
opinion.
But i think someone who has the job in creating Starfleet ships, has to pay respect to the source material and it's basic aesthetic.
What i always really liked about Star Trek designs is that the ships have no unneccessary greebles, but instead (against the usual trend) mostly have a smooth looking outer surface. Which in turn forces a designer to arrange the availlable elements (saucer, engineering hull, nacelles for ex.) in a way so they fit perfectly together and create a balanced and whole. (sry for my bad english)
