Description Warning: GIANT file!!!!!!!!!!!

Sorry for the english-mistakes on some parts I'm no native speaker so it's pretty hard to get the things said that I want to say sometimes

Why is tutorial so hard to read/ not straight but instead you have to scroll up in the middle?

Reason is simple: I wanted to do it that way But from previous tutorials I know that there are no deviations longer than 9999 pixel allowed... And after writing Part 1-3 I was at 9000 pixel, so I had to make the layout this way Hope you understand ^^ Thanks~

Official:

Here is the promised lesson about cloth-design and ornaments! I can only repeat it again and again: Practice is the key to success~

Homework:
All I can ask you to do for homework is to practice. Try the different things like magic circles and laces in your own style and experiment with them a little

This lesson was written by exclusively for and Please don't repost it anywhere without my written permission!!!

Skye and Elliot are the mascots of

Elliot was designed by Skye by

Programs:
Sketch, Color and Tutorial: Photoshop CS
Ink and Ornaments: MangaStudio 4.0
Additional media: Wacom Tablet and loads of music...

If you have any questions, feel free to ask.

Semi-official:

Wanna practice even more?
Give yourself a challenge! Make a list of words that you want to put into your cloth design! Words that have nothing to do with each other and somehow combine them in an outfit!
And if it was fun to you and you want a real challenge, check out my contest ( lol) [link]

Personal:

*dead* x_X

Alright, guys,... Here it is... and I'm officially insane that I did this... OTL OTL OTL

This must be the most giant tutorial I ever wrote

My back hurts, my neck hurts, my fingers hurt but HELL YES I'M HAPPY AND SATISFIED! I kinda butchered Elliot's and Skye's design but... come on they are chibis!! Sorry, achiru >_<

When I saw Elliot's design the very first time I was thinking right away 'They look as if they could be constantly fighting...' lol I don't know why, but making my charas fight each other all the time is a prove of my love for them xD POOR THEM!!!!

Ehem... LOL!!!!

Hope you enjoy~~~ *can go die happily now* TwT

My goodness this was hilarious. I love the character interaction between Elli and Skye: they're perfect together. However, Elliot is annoyed that he's shorter than Skye in the last couple of panels. He thinks he ought to be a head taller.

On to the critique!

First off, is there a title to this lesson? I want to see it on the image large and clear! (Not just the title of the deviation.)

Secondly, because this is such a large file, I found that reading in order was really difficult when I had scrolled down Steps 1 and 2, and kept going to 4, realizing I had to scroll all the way back up and horizontally to see Step 3.

I know that the image file gets insanely long if you placed Step 3 under 2 and before 4 in a long, long, long file--but that's actually easier to scroll through and to read naturally. This would be different if you were to make it "page" format rather than "screen" format.

You could also have broken this into two lessons instead of one. Sometimes too much information is overwhelming in one lesson. Best to focus on one key point to take away. Personally I think the color theory can be a lesson by itself.

Good points: The background does not interfere but compliments the text and images. It's really annoying to read text over images unless there is enough saturation to tell the layers apart, so I like what you've done with the color scheme.

The font is good. Personally I prefer lowercase and uppercase because an all-caps font feels like I'm being yelled at. But this type of all-caps font is regularly used in comics, so I can't complain too much. It is a perfectly legible font.

However, there is still one more nit-picky detail to be addressed: font size. I think that varying the size at least between regular/normal text and headings will make your work seem much more organized and clearer at first glance on the thumbnail, as your eye naturally is drawn toward the bigger letters, so you can see what direction to read. Sometimes bold is not enough, so a good contrast in size is more eye-catching.

Lastly, your narration is good. It's very lively and even though English isn't your first language, your communication skill is very strong. Mistakes can easily be overlooked as part of your accent. It's hard to say what's proper English now anyway.

Try to avoid breaking up words as much as possible--it's okay to have blank space in the speech bubble. It's much harder to read Des--next line--igning than Designing. Other than that, I like the text.

To sum things up, the lesson was a good read. The screenshots and the text compliment each other smoothly and effortlessly, with lots of cute humor along the way. And Skye, you are a very good model. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="" title=" (Big Grin)" />

It is better now! But Elliot is still annoyed that his hair is not two-toned. XD; Though the height makes him feel much happier.

Thanks a lot for the advice, achiru! I will try to consider it next time!! ^^

LOL I noticed that thing with Elliot being smaller than Syke in the end this morning as well XD I was like 'What the hell where I thinking?!' Sorry, that was an accident

Thanks for your advice. I will try to apply it to my next lesson!

T_____TΒ  Β Β  You have absolutely right... I'm so pessimistic about my work... but see.. I started to drawing at least 20 years ago... and still I'm not able to do ANYTHING of the amazing work I saw everyone capable to drawing do...
I can draw and still I can't do anything good... I want to improve... the digital coloring manga style... but I don't know where to starts... theres' many tutorials but all of them gives different instructions... I just want to understand why my drawings looks so 'flat' (even once I add shades)..

look:Β the-midnight-fairy.deviantart.…
This is the only thing I was 'capable' to do after 2 days.... 2 D-A-Y-S Β working Β 20 hours at day ... 40 hours to make this......Β

Β it's because I don't know how to really shade my works... for example... I saw your tutorial here... at first you add color and the drawing it's flat'... just like mine.... but then... you do something and at the end looks in that final way....Β  Β Β  Β I want to learn too.... please teach me....Β  Β Β  Β Β

T^T I'm an useless person... everyone can make beautiful digital manga characters... and me not....Β  Β Β  Β Β  Β Β  Β T^T

What I see many people doing is drawing without understanding -what- they draw. Study other aritsts or look at references. Try to -understand- why something looks the way it does. How does light work, how do colors blend into each other,... there are tons of really good books out there that help. One mistake could be trying too hard to draw 'Manga'. It's a mistake I witnessed from a lot of people. 'It's supposed to look tis way cause it's manga-style', meaning the positioning of the eyes, when a limb looks off, etc... The most important thing is understanding realism, then you can work on style. For younger artists (teenagers) it might be a good idea to start small and just keep drawing and not bothering about realism, but for many they start understanding anatomy anyway that way. If that failed (since you said you draw since 20 years) you need to try approaching it from another angle. The problem usually isn't the 'way of applying shades on the canvas', it's the understanding where the shades have to go to make it look natural and interesting. If you understood once where to place shades, you can apply them no matter if you are working with digital or traditional media, Photoshop or even Paint (seriously, I saw people doing mircales in Paint!!!!!). Try gaining knowledge and applying them to your works and ask friends to review your work honestly, to tell you if they see anything wrong with it. It helps enormously. As for the gradient thing: It basically means, thinking of colors that work well together beforehand. If you are working with a new character design and you aren't sure if the colors will look nice together, I sometimes put them all together into a gradient to see whether it burns my eyes right from the start or not.

This is a fun, some what basic tutorial that makes you think after reading all of it.Β
It was also intresting to see some character interaction trough it.Β

I'll favorite it so I know I've something when I need to try and design something for someone. A character of mine perhaps.

I simply love your little personal step at the end. It's easy to get discouraged when creating artwork, and remembering to have personal motivation and, most importantly, BE PROUD of my work is hard sometimes. But it was after I saw this that I started taking much more pride in what I drew.

Also the tutorial is helpful because i'm unable to come up with original outfits or colour schemes without looking at other pictures. You have helped me understand a little more about drawing. Thank you.

I know this is kind of late and I'm not Deamond, but nope. Although it's a digital art tutorial, you can use this with traditional art as well as other art programs such as Sai and GIMP because it's all generic information and not "This is how you do it in -insert Program here-".

((I may be mistaken, since I didn't make it, but I'm pretty sure it would work from what I can tell after reading the tutorial and it made no specification as to what program/medium it's good for.))
