Description I think it was about 6 months ago that I decided to have a go at a reskin for the item crate in Half-Life 2. Valve's was good but a little low-res for my tastes, and Fakefactory only did a quick pass at it. I wanted mine to have a little more character.

I added the old Combine logo to the front, some miscellaneous serial numbers, warning signs and such around it. Edited a better Wood texture for it and gave it a more detailed normal map. I'm thinking about doing an episode 2 version of it. Making it more worn and dirty, like it's about to break open just from touching it.

Check out my release at FPSBanana if you'd like to download it.

It's a nice high-def skin with a touch from the beta. I like it.

Yeah I was going for a Beta style, but still wanted to keep it retail looking. I've always been fascinated with what the Beta had, and how distinct it's style was from the HL2 we all know. But a lot of the Beta content, if it was introduced into retail wouldn't mesh too well with the game's world, in my opinion (The citizens are an exception to this). For example the original color scheme for this was going to be a dark grey box, decayed wood with spatters of red paint around the edges, looking like it had seen better days. Good in theory but when I tested it in-game, it just stood out too much. like "HAY OVER HERE! ITEM BOX!" rather than being more seamless.

That color scheme will probably end up on the APC though.

Either way, this is the one skin I download every time I install a mod.
