Description Haven't been able to work on any art for awhile, so when the opportunity presented itself I spent about 5 hours coloring this piece.

I had a lot of fun, and experimented with some new things as well as practicing others.Β  NO TEXTURES were used, just brush work, so that was different for me.

Drawn and inked traditionally.

The idea behind the hook/staff thing she's holding was that she sails on one of those flying ships, so her hook/staff thing would help her when she's trying to haul in sails and grab stuff high up in the rigging of the ship.

Lovely! Great scenery, I'd like to stand where she stands. And beautiful colouring work again, I love your strong shadows. Maybe the heroine would stand out more if she would get brighter colours than the rest of the scenery? Working with contrast and stuff. Just a thought!Β

And I think you hit the nail on the head about the brighter colors!Β  That definitely would make her stand out more.Β  I also thought maybe I should have made her a little less painterly and little more "simple" in terms of coloring style, kind of like what they do with a lot of animation, where the characters are more simple.Β  What do you think?

Mmm, it depends on the purpose of the picture. In this one-scene-shot, I absolutely don't mind that she is more painterly - on the contrary, I think that is very beautiful. If you were to make a comic book out of it, not every drawing can be as painterly as this one - it would distract the reader. But a beautiful shot with more detail and painterly style here and there gives a comic something extra. Just not too often. Β

A few months ago I filled up a page or so in one of my sketchbooks detailing how a flying ship would work (sails, rigging, masts, ships wheel, etc. . .) just for the heck of it/fun.Β  Then a month later I drew this picture and decided "oh what the hey" I already designed some flying ships I might as well add them to this picture. XD
