Description I've wanted to do this topic for a while, since it has come up multiple times within the past week at my barn. And I feel like horse people could find this useful

Btw I left out horse safety because that definitely needs an entire article to cover

Next week's article: Leg Care and Wear

'always wear a helmet'

I would never even get on a horse without mine. It baffles me how some people can just bypass safety like that. where I live i believe it is actually illegal to go out on a horse without a helmet. My sisters horse fell over whilst cantering about a month ago, and her helmet was cracked. that would've been her head if it wasn't for the helmet.

Riding helmets are nice but I'd sure like to see a heck of a lot more R&D on them. At the moment they're still pretty darn primitive versus say, a football helmet, a hockey helmet, or a motorcycle helmet.

Whether or not the blow to the head from hitting the ground gives you a concussion when you are wearing a riding helmet is still going to be luck of the draw. Either your brain bounces, or it doesn't. In ice hockey they have helmets in development that may actually do a lot more to negate the forces at play in this type of concussions. If ice hockey can come up with that, why are we still riding with helmets that haven't been really looked at in the past 20 years?

FWIW I'm not anti-helmet. But helmets aren't really going to do a whole lot for preventing paralysis from a riding accident, because there's still nothing to protect your neck. Will they protect your cognitive function? Yes, as long as you land on something the helmet covers.

Horses aren't bicycles. It's a hell of a lot further to the ground. We have oodles of technology and millions of people who ride. Update some helmets plz.

I completely agree with you! They are decent but they don't get the job done as well as they should

Thanks! Hard to find people who agree with me on this, actually. Which is really rather sad.

well the riding school i go to isn't safe, the hay barn is cluttered like mad, everything seems to be old and breaking, and the aisles are not wide enough,if you open the door it takes up the whole width of it.and the last point,i fell off a forward going chestnut due to a misunderstanding, she if old and she was cantering way to fast and she wasn't following the track,i fell off,and in not riding her for a while now.

well i doubt they would listen to me,the owner hates me and my mum ,for no reason.my mum offered to buy a riding school pony when i was like 7,she said no and 2 weeks later he was sold,a piebald cob was for sale ,way overpriced,my mum asked to buy and keep him there, she say not because she needs the space, but she goes and lets a random lady loan him for 5 years, and keep him there ,and she only rides him once a week.i quit being a helper there, everyone hated me and i knew it,despite what they said

The big issue that everyone has with helmets, for some reason, is that they don't like the "trapped head" feeling. If you have the right size with adjustments correct with the straps, it shouldn't be a problem! Even the lady I work for needs to be nagged to wear her helmet, and she is a Grand Prix gold medalist in Dressage. Helmets are too much of a "pain" to be messed with, but people suffer concussions and even death from not wearing them. I can't feel anything but a sense of disapproval; the idiot didn't wear a helmet, I have no reason to feel sorry for them. They took that risk that could have been avoided with one minor minute of sticking the helmet on.

I've been there; you don't feel all that "free" when you're lying in a hospital bed and can't move whatsoever because you suffered head trauma that paralyzed you from the neck down.

Amazing points stated here, hopefully people will check everything over after reading this.

Would they rather have the ability to move their body or the hour that they have to "trap" their head? And thank you so much !

My horse spooked at a cow and bucked me off on a gravel road over a year ago. The visor on my helmet got completely scraped off from me sliding on my face, and then my back. If I had been wearing one of those cheap helmets with the visors that just snap off, I probably would've gotten more than a scrape on my chin (as far as the injuries to my face, still have some nasty scars on my back -_-).

The lesson: don't ride a horse that is afraid of cows if you live in a major cattle area, and a more expensive helmet could save your face.

I fell off my horse on spring break when the horse started bucking. I got away with just a headache. If I hadn't been wearing my helmet I would've gotten a concussion.

My sister slipped off the side of her saddle and fell during spring break also. Her helmet broke and she got a concussion. Without her helmet, she could've been seriously hurt.

I will NEVER ride without a helmet again.
