Description
no marker madness today unfortunately as i was busy finishing up thumbnails/roughs/layouts for the latest issue of spec spidey uk. i thought u might be interested in having a rare look at the preproduction work that goes into comics and the journey before a spec spidey issue ends up on the shelves. these were actually done full size as roughs. then shrunk down as thumbnails for easier viewing. not as clear unfortunately but it's not meant to be. heh.Related content

I'd love to know how long this process takes you.... I have no idea how people manage to produce a 20 ish page comic, do all the planning and inking and get it out within a month... particularly bearing in mind it has to go to someone else to be coloured lettered etc etc!

i rough out a bout 3 to 4 pages a day. sometimes 5 if i'm lucky. for finish pencils i can churn out 2 to 3 a day. same with the inks. if time is short, i pass it on to an inker.
well, see the think is, in comicdom, the pubishers most of the time work a few month in advance. so if something falls behind, its not the be all or end all.
also, if theres a separate penciller to inker to colourist, things can overlap. for example, once the penciller has finished page 1 to 3, as the penciller is working on page 4, the inker is inking pages 1 tto 3, and when the inker is finishedhe passes it on to the colourist as he moves on to the next page and so on and so forth. so unless u're really really fast and have the time to do it all, it's best to have a team to work with.

ThatΒ΄s amazing. Thanks for showing it here. ItΒ΄s too bad that itΒ΄s so small. But the composition of the thumbnails is fantastic. You use a blue pencils for sketching? Your drawings are so good I think thereΒ΄s no need to ink. Why dont you just colorate you pencildrawings it would sure lokk great. Keep up the good work

thanks heaps for the excellent comments. sometimes i do colour my pencils if i have time. anyways, these were actually done at full size 11x17, but scaled down and compiled as thumbnails. so in actual fact, there's 12 separate pieces all ready to go to the final pencil or inks stage.

I will check your gallery to find a coloured pencildrawing. I think Ink gives a greater contrast but pencildrawings are softer and more subtle thats why I like them so much. Kuberts Wolverine Origin is one of the best comics ever if you ask, it would be great to see more comics in that style. Do you ink your drawings yourself? Thanks for the answer

sometimes if i have time, i will ink my own pencils. but on a tight deadline, i usually pass it to an inker.

welcome dude. i wish i have more hours in a day to do more of this kind of stuff. but time is always a factor, so i tend to skip scanning in the roughs or prelim layouts.

deemonproductions In reply to neobie [2008-03-30 23:03:13 +0000 UTC]
well, i started off by drawing heaps and then posting my artwork on internet art forums. eventually i got noticed and got offered work. and from there, attending comic conventions and showing my work to the editors.

dude, adapting the script and creating the layouts is the most stressful part of the process, imo!
tight job

deemonproductions In reply to ZEBES [2008-03-30 23:01:44 +0000 UTC]
for me, it's the most relaxing. i get to to thumbnail or do layouts outside of my work environment which helps to chill. starbucks, restaurant, parks, art galleries, museums, etc. i only get stressed when the writer wants three or four things to happen in one panel, which means breaking it up into two panels but then realising he's already got like six or seven panels in that page already.... lol

hahaha that's the worst thing, Im actually doing a project where I find that kind of things in EVERY page, hahahaa =_=

i bet u can't beat my experience on he-man. a couple of pages had 12 to 13 panels. arrghhhhhh! i was gonna complain, but the writer was also my boss!

just wow =O

heheh. that was an experience. so now when i see a writer giveme an 8 or 9 panel script, altho i complain, i know i can handle it if need be.

very good to see those!!! good insight... but do you allways put that much detail work into the thumbnail stage?
π: 0 β©: 1
deemonproductions In reply to MangaAngel [2008-03-30 16:01:50 +0000 UTC]
well, it's not so much a thumbnail than an actual 100% rough of the finish piece. i don't like doing things twice. the thumbnails are actually just blobs and shapes that i roughly doodle on the actual script. so it's really not for anyone else's eyes but my own since no one will probably understand it. for this issue, as it was text heavy with a lot of action, the editor was a bit cautious and just wanted to see layouts before i finish up the piece. so i roughed it out and if it needs changing it's still easily done and with the roughs the editor can actually see what's going on. so from here, it's going straight into finish inks.

don't you want more time on the pencils or is it good enough to ink?
and by the way it's looking great... i wish it was being sold here in israel...
π: 0 β©: 1
deemonproductions In reply to MangaAngel [2008-03-30 22:58:00 +0000 UTC]
well, if i was passing it on to another inker to ink over my pencils, then yes, i would put a bit more detail, clean the pieces up and refine it. but cause with this issue i'm inking it myself, i tend to add details as i inki. i guess i've been doing it for a while now that i'm comfortable enough to do that.
yea, man i wish the books were sold world wide. but only in uk unfortunately.

how long have you been with the title?

deemonproductions In reply to MangaAngel [2008-03-31 04:03:27 +0000 UTC]
nope. i'm hired by a third party. they have the licence to distribute anything marvel within the uk. i've never worked with an editor from marvel. i deal mainly with the licensor, and they deal with marvel.
ah, but that's what computers and liquid paper's for!
i've been on spidey uk coming up to 2 and a half years now. altho only as a regular artist for a year and a half.
