Oookay, for those of you who do not recognize her, this is Agatha Clay from Girl Genius comics by Studio Foglio Productions.~ScreaminCricket turned me on to these with a link to Girl Genius 101, and I've been hooked. Thoroughly.
Now I'm not a steampunk fan by any stretch of the imagination (Wild Wild West sucked a few assorted things, and if there were any other versions that made it to movies, I don't remember them too well. >_>; ), but this series has got me rethinking my opinion of the genre. It's got great intruigue, some romance, mad scientists, love-to-hate characters, comical monsters...AND DID I SAY MAD SCIENTISTS??!!
But I've got to say...with all the cool words like "clank"--meaning robot, "construct"--Frankenstein type humanoid, and "spark"--mad scientist or genius...the vibrant colors instead of gloomy tones, and the classic humor...what's not to like?
Seriously, the Jagermonsters are hilarious. One nice thing about it there isn't a single case of outright stupidity on anyone's part.
Anyways....I digress.
This was done in PS 7.0 with Aiptek pen and tablet. I decided to try for some of GG 101's coloring textures in the background, just to give it that flair. I decided to draw her in more my own style, but to sort of bridge it to theirs with the coloring.

Took me a while to get into this comic (having a tech background, I had to fight the urge to pick it apart, such as how they can have a holographic projector, but somehow not have electric motors/generators, telephones, or even telegraphs), but once I got past all that and into the meat of the story, I was hooked, too!
...Of course, it helps that Ms. Heterodyne is a VERY SEXY mad genius...!!

Oh I'm sure that helped. Yeah I had to get past the tech, because I hadn't read anything gaslamp-oriented or steampunk either. I was more leaned towards spacepunk, cyberpunk, sci-fi, space opera, etc. But once I got past the setting, I really had fun with the story, the humor, the characters, and so on.

Kudos on sticking to your own style. Too many fan artists these days try to duplicate instead of adapt.

I think there's a place for duplication, and there's a place for adaptation. I kinda went for both in my picture: something to show this as fanart, and still homage the artist, but also to still exercise my own style.

The outfit is perfect, and I really think that clank looks like something she'd make. I did picture her a little differently, though. A little heavier, more curvy. Of course, with Phil's art style, most people kindof look like that...

I personally like that he's made the women a little heavier and curvier, and a bit less like today's stick people. We could use more comicers who do this.
I made that back when I was just reading 101.
Now I read both 101 and Advanced, and my perspective of how she looks has changed a little as well.

Nice job interpreting Ms. Heterodyne with your own style. I like the Foglios' style as much as the next bloke, however I'm from a school of thought that believes that fan art should be somewhat original (instead of the blind copying that tends to prevail).

Agreed. Really badass fanart, to me, tends to come from people who build up things in their own style, with their own take on the look of characters.

Yeah. In the 101 books the coloring for her hair tends towards blondish. It's later on in 101 and Advanced that she's more reddish blonde, so to be quite honest, I'm not entirely sure WHAT her haircolor is. The colorists kept putting more and more reds and oranges into her hair as time went on...heh.

I've thought long about what throws me off here. Not the characters, certainly, you've done a nice job on the expression and pose, and rendering is fine. (You might want to downsize it to get rid of some sketchiness and, oh yeah, because it's really friggin huge 
Focus. Yeah, that's it. And the BG is the culprit. You have a circular gradient that leads the eye to... can you see it? ... Right behind her head. Yeah, the eye goes there because Ooh, saturation and color! and sticks there. You want the focus somewhere between the two interacting characters, not behind one of them. And you want it on the characters, not the pretty gradient.
That's all, my € 0.02. Yes, that's Euro.

The comics tend to have the same problem--brightly saturated backgrounds where the drawings and expressions had to stand out against it--and yeah they use those colors.
I was trying to emulate the style. I think if I had to do it over again I'd have knocked the background's saturation down a few notches or used cooler colors.
