Description

Boss #1: Aquamentus

"A type of dragon that some call a unicorn. As well as having lots of attacking power, it's a fearful opponent. It emits mean beams."

-The Legend of Zelda manual

On one of two large islands in the center of Lake Hylia, Hyrule’s largest central inland body of water, sits an ancient tree. A tree that somehow feels like it was once a living creature, the surrounding air reeking of a deathly stench. Millenia ago, the tree was converted into an underground complex and entrance to the underworld by a tribe of ancient druids that worshipped one of the oldest demon gods: An aquatic dragon-like beast bestowed with the name Aquamentus. Though it is yet to be known why, carvings resembling that of an eagle are found all over the complex; a complicated labyrinth of cramped, crudely dug-out tunnels, with the entangling roots from the tree above creeping down below. Aquamentus is one of the oldest of the 6 demon gods, its large equine-like body emaciated and worn, its joints cracking, splitting and rattling as it moves. Its seemingly dilapidated body shouldn't let a warrior's guard down however, as its size and abilities are formidable. Adorned with a large horn near the top of its skull, Aquamentus has the ability to emit lightning from it as a conductor, the bolts of which can fatally burn and char any living thing. Ganon's possession of the creature has given it but one purpose, to defend the Triforce shard with its life.

One of the elderly demon's offspring had also been captured and utilized by Ganon as a guard for another Triforce shard, found in a secretive tomb underneath an abandoned fairy pool in western Hyrule.

So you took the "Aqua" part of its name and made that literal. Yet you kept the creature's overall resemblance to the legendary "Kirin". Very nicely done.

This is definitely an interesting re-imagining, in the old manual artwork he had a bit of a horse/unicorn/dragon vibe to him. You went completely in a piscean route here (well also crustacean too, but the head reminds me of one of those leafy sea-horses), I'm just imaging him having a rather nasty wide AOE tail swipe attack as well as the standard energy blast breath ark.
And I guess beyond that small opening behind him lays the Triforce piece? Fantastic job as usual my friend

Yeah, looked at some strange sea-horses and whatnot, it has 'Aqua' in its name, so I thought 'Why not?' It'd be cool if you could only attack it if it comes up on land or surfaces, otherwise it'd be swimming all over the place. And yup! That area is supposed to be the triforce room!

Thanks as always!

Gotta love that spooky crustacean tail.

Thanks! The little legs were a last-minute addition, thought they added a flair of weirdness to its anatomy!

I instantly thought "The Neverending Story meets Shadow of the Colossus" for some reason.

Huh...perhaps the dragon's head is why I thought of the former work of fiction and the color scheme (of both the monster and habitat) is why the second reference came to mind.

I can see that! Though I've never played SOTC (been meaning to, believe me!) Neverending Story is one of my favorite fantasy movies, the aesthetic and atmosphere is so good!

SOTC utilizes a surprisingly broad palette of greys for its major architectural designs. You'll see what I mean...should you manage to keep the protagonist alive long enough, anyhow!

When someone thought it would be fun idea to put together a mantis shrimp and a sea horse.

OH MY GOD THAT TAIL! It's so scary
I liked so much your re-design!
I mean, it's missing his wings, but he lived on the underground and never actually flew... so this design choice never made sense .-.
also you made him more aquatic and living in a island, fitting more with his name!
You make me want to see a old-school zelda remake! Even being the most useless remake of the story

Deimos-Remus In reply to HappyMasky [2016-12-12 02:00:31 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a ton! Was thinking of having his wings physically clipped off so he couldn't escape, but there's just no room to fly anyway, so I thought getting rid of them entirely made sense.

Though the new Zelda title is looking promising, I'd love to see something more akin to Dark Souls someday. That'd be pretty sweet.

Oooh, very nice. Love the water reflections and the tail is super creepy. I almost feel sorry for it though, it seems kinda sad and lonely.

Wow, certainly an unnerving design.  I get the feeling even the bravest of adventurers would be freaked out by the sight of something like this!  Always looking forward to the next one!

Just out of curiosity, do you plan on having Ganon's demon form wield the trident as well?

Deimos-Remus In reply to guncraze [2016-12-12 02:01:55 +0000 UTC]

Thanks, wanted to give this guy a really strange design!

Yup! I have Ganon's composition figured out, and I think the trident fits really well!

How on Earth did you make easily the goofiest Zelda bosses into the single creepiest of your re-imaginings so far? This is beyond nightmarish, you did an amazing job with this dude

Deimos-Remus In reply to RebusBrown [2016-12-12 02:04:14 +0000 UTC]

Ha, definitely wanted to make this one look like a living corpse! The original is endearing in its own way, but it looks more like a plush doll than a fierce dragon creature, haha.

Thanks so much!

RebusBrown In reply to Deimos-Remus [2016-12-12 03:29:42 +0000 UTC]

I hear ya ha ha! Also, glad you finally put the "Aqua" in it's name to actual use, being that it's aquatic. Was such a pet peeve it was called that but had no relation to water lol

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Deimos-Remus In reply to RebusBrown [2016-12-14 20:49:37 +0000 UTC]

Yeah! and Aquamentus has probably the coolest name of the original bosses too, so I felt like I had to make a creature fitting enough for it!

Zevroid In reply to RebusBrown [2016-12-04 04:38:18 +0000 UTC]

I think Digdogger was goofier, honestly. Aquamentus was just a generic dragon, but Digdogger was a giant...Eyeball...Urchin...Thing. With a really silly name.

Yeah, would love to see some of the forgotten enemies and bosses make a comeback. I'm kinda sick of seeing the same creatures again and again.

First boss! It looked really goofy and rather cutesy, so I thought to remedy that.
