Description

Boss 6: Gohma

"The super-huge crab that lives in the labyrinths. Its hard shell will repulse any attack. Attack its weak point with a special weapon."

-The Legend of Zelda manual

Just south of of the western Death Mountain pass is its alleged namesake, a sprawling necropolis, littered with thousands of indiscernible headstones, graves and catacombs, weathered by time and neglect. Atop a lonely plateau is the land’s largest mausoleum, dedicated to the lives of countless individuals of high wealth and standing. Images and icons of kings and beasts are found carved all over its walls, covered in webs and layers upon layers of dust and rot. Because of the mausoleum's wealth of dead bodies, Like-Likes are particularly common in this section of the underworld, as are Bubbles and the re-animated slime-molds. Lying dormant in the crypt's lowest levels for thousands of years before Ganon’s arrival was the oldest of the 6 gods, a crustacean behemoth known as Gohma; A corpse-encrusted, hard-shelled cyclopic monstrosity that dwarfs the other demons with its immeasurable size and strength. Gohma is believed to be the maternal source of the Tektites that roam Hyrule's overworld, able to birth as many as hundreds of the creatures in any given season. With Gohma possessing a rock-hard carapace, armored underbelly and humongous claws, her only weak spot and exposed organ is the lone yellowed eye that sits above her large mandibles.

It's the type of attention to detail that you insert into this that make this piece so mind boggling. Those skeletons plastered to the claws, the pillars in the background, the subdued dark colours and the monstrous shadow on the wall... you've quickly become one of my favourite artists on this site man.

Thanks to the skeletons embedded in this monstrosity's exterior, it appears as if Gohma is not merely in possession of rock-hard armor but seemingly part of the rock *herself*...almost as if she were a fossil brought back to life.

So cool! Once these are done, you should really do a side-by-side of all of them with the original sprites.

So, Gohma lives in Moria?  Lol.

But, no, this is seriously some boss work, dude.  I've always kind of wished that more Zelda games would utilize Gohma's crab claws in boss fights, kind of like in Oracle of Seasons.  The fact that the eye seems proportionately small compared to everything else about the body can easily come off as unnerving, and you've done a great job building more creepy and intimidating atmosphere.

Can't wait for the last few pictures, and hopefully a little more lore added on before it ends.  I will be very sad to see it go.

Ha, there was a sketchup model of Moria, and it was the perfect layout that I had envisioned for the space. I did leave some details out, and created the angle and lighting myself, but it was a great guideline to go off of! Drawing it afterwards took quite a while though, but I think it was worth it!

Thanks! Oh yeah, same here. While working on this project, I've been trying to imagine how each boss fight could be radically different from one another, and using the creatures' strengths to keep things varied and interesting. As much as I love games like OoT, the boss fights are pretty standard "hit then dodge" type of deals, which admittedly gets a bit stale, especially considering that the series hasn't changed all that much since.

Looking forward to revealing 'em! I'll be glad when it's done (to have a full portfolio of images), but it's been a blast, so it's a bit bittersweet!

I only count 3 as far as I know, just Beast Ganon, Link and Zelda right? Unless I'm forgetting something! (which is entirely possible)

Overworld map is on the list too, unless you decided not to draw it.

Oh, I thought you were referring to character pieces. Yup, still drawin' the map!
