Description Underworld Enemy #16: Patra

"The Patra attack in groups, in two types of formations. Both formation groups are strong. So be on your toes!"

-The Legend of Zelda Manual

Though Ganon's powers grant him the ability to conjure spells, mutate beasts and possess others, he cannot see everything that happens in the Underworld, at least with his own vision. As Ganon is known to collect strange and archaic items such as rare plants, ancient texts and dead animals, his two most prized possessions are the eyes of an extinct and unnamed beast that used to dwell in Lake Hylia. Possessing the creature's plucked eyes and giving them the ability of flight, Ganon created the Patra. Telepathically linked to Ganon, the Patra have become another set of eyes for their master, patrolling his underworld fortress with a keen sense of sight like no other. Eerily, the Patra can reproduce, spawning hordes of smaller eyes, all of which link back to Ganon's mind, giving him a vast visual map of his entire fortress. When a master Patra is attacked, its offspring will return, forming a very tight ring of defense around the central eye.Β

That is the coolest description ever. Love this one!

In the original. I always thought the Patras were giant bugs due to the graphical limitations, but the later games made it show they were really flying eyeball monsters.

I like your unique backstory to the Patras. I'd imagine the monster they originally belonged to as Argus-like.

I can totally see that, especially with the middle patra having such strange proportions and those 4 little dots on it. Thanks!Β

Absolutely awesome. Definitely get a Zelda II vibe from the wingless Patras. Sick architecture in the background... exactly the kind of stuff I'd love to see in a new Zelda game. Massive enigmatic structures from long lost ages... Anyway sick work my friend. I love it

Thanks as always man! Definitely got the feeling I was going for with the architecture, been influenced by the scale of Dark Souls environments lately!Β

Another great design! I love how well something as simple as, "eyeball with wings" can work out here

Thanks! Yeah, been a long-existing trope for a reason!Β

I love how you make the dungeons bigger than they actually are. I mean, it's like comparing the cities from the PokΓ©mon game to the anime...

Thanks! Imagining the dungeons as something more vast and deep underground than in the games has been fun to do!

Some of the artwork in the original manual also implies those halls being much higher (or Link is a dwarf with pointy ears) I recall.

Yeah! Wanted to inject a bit more of that dark fantasy vibe into it this time around!

Wow, Legend of Zelda would look so much more terrifying if the creatures looked like this πŸ˜₯

Amazing artwork!

Your work is so amazing, bud. Where are you coming up with these descriptions, though? Are they your own spin on it or are you getting it from other source material? Either way, your descriptions with each of these give amazing depth to the creatures and it's awesome A trading card company should hire you to do artwork for cards like this since they look like cards already ^_^

Thanks so much! Been writing 'em myself, which has been half the fun of this project for sure!Β

Would love to put these together as a series of cards or a book! Nintendo can be really anal when it comes to fan projects, so I'll have to tread carefully if I do so!
