Description
Underworld Enemy #15: Wizzrobe"The Master of Movement. He appears here and there letting out magic spells that Link's little shield can't hold back. He's pretty strong. Watch out!"
-The Legend of Zelda Manual
Hyrule is home to many practitioners of magic, but with the good must also come the bad, as many men and women have been banished from the land for involving themselves in witchcraft and arcane occult knowledge. In need of a leader and a cause to unite them, several of these men and women fled to the desert in search of a scant-known, yet reputable sorcerer by the name of Ganon. Β Starting from humble beginnings as a mentor to these select few underground followers, Ganon finally found the army he was looking for, but it needed to grow. As Ganon became increasingly confident in not only his own skill, but the skill of his pupils, a siege of Hyrule and its protective relics became a more imminent reality. In the coming months, Ganon's followers multiplied, and with a considerable army of devoted and trained wizards, alchemists and mercenaries, his master-plan was enacted. After ransacking Hyrule's capital city, and with two pieces of the Triforce in Ganon's grasp, the sorcerer and his disciples became more powerful than ever, but at a cost. Along with the power that the triforce gave them, Ganon and his minions were transformed, becoming less and less human, and taking on more animalistic and demonic characteristicsΒ with every passing day. Though Ganon's now heavily mutated and massive body made wearing a robe impractical, his followers opted to wear cloaks to hide their monstrous guises.
After procuring the Triforce, kidnapping Princess Zelda and fleeing to his subterranean fortress in Death Mountain, Ganon employed his cult of followers to patrol the underworld's many tombs. In these tombs, the sorcerers would put their skills to use by creating and mutating beasts and other monstrosities to help protect the stolen relics. An encounter with one of these wizards is certain death; Not only do their wands cast powerful beams that can sear skin, they also have the ability to teleport anywhere around a room instantaneously.

I prefer the Wizzrobes being a race of their own to Hylian magic-wielders who have gone in too deep.

Hm. I'm getting a Notre Dame meets Suspiria vibe from this piece. And I just realized they both fit with the tone of the game as I'm typing this.

My favorite Wizzrobe design is probably the one from Wind Waker, although this is a close second.
Your rendition truly conveys the sense of terror that these guys bring whenever they show up deep in a labyrinth,
and the certain death that almost always follows.

The Wind Waker Wizzrobe is certainly the most unique version in the series!Β
Thanks so much, glad to see that I conveyed that!

No problem, mate. Another thing I really like about your design is that it reminds me of the Nazgul from Lord of the Rings.

Yeah! The Nazgul are so simple, but so effective.Β

Your version of a Wizzrobe makes me think of Poe's "Masque of the Red Death". The overall simplicity of the creature, looking more like a blood red shroud enveloping darkness just gives this sense of overall unease. Pair that with the backgrounds dark colors and it's just a really unsettling creature. I prefer this design to what we've gotten in recent games: flamboyant, prancing bird creatures wielding sparkly magic wands? Come ON! Give me THIS!

Thanks a ton! Was channeling a bit of the Ghost of Christmas 'Yet to Come' (particularly from the 1984 TV adaption of A Christmas Carol) for this guy's look! The BotW designs look cool as character designs by themselves, but yeah, wished for a more dark and statuesque Wizzrobe.Β

I hadn't even thought of the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come as another reference, but I could definitely see it! I really wished they had gone a bit darker for BotW. The game's got a pretty dismal feel to it, the character and monster design should reflect that. Your version would have been perfect!

I love the layout of the environment of the game and the mood is pretty great. Glad to see the Lynels return, but yeah, the Wizzrobes aren't terribly threatening.Β
Thanks again!

I love the Easter eggs scattered throughout the game. Lynels in a 3-D Zelda game was great to see.
No problem

Even without the Zelda aspect, I like the simplicity of this illustration. Not too minimal, not too busy, but just right, be it the wrinkles of the robes or the overall composition.

Your version of the Wizzrobe might be one of the simplest designs among your creatures - All I can tell is that it has its charm and this works perfectly. Sometimes we don't need to go for an excess of design elements to tell a good story out from the character's appearance, and I guess that's what you thought.Β

Thanks a ton, I really appreciate it!
Sometimes simplicity is key, as detail can needlessly complicate or overcompensate for a lack of something else in many cases.Β
