Description
Main Characters: Princess Zelda
With Hyule being classified as a principality, the sovereign state's monarchs have always been princes and princesses. Succeeding her ill stricken mother at the age of 16, Princess Zelda comes from a historic long line of matriarchs bestowed with the same name. When the monarch inherits the land, Hyrule's elders are obligated to show the newly throned Prince or Princess the city's most highly guarded secret, the ancient Triforce, of which the citizens know nothing about. Influenced by the Triforce and showing wisdom and intuition beyond her years, the young Princess had the ability to govern with a gentle and fair hand.
On a restless night a year after her initiation, the Princess had a premonition of a tragedy that was to befall her people and their land, but it was too late. At the gates of the royal city was a cloaked figure, a tall, diseased, elderly and unexplainably strange man carrying an ancient Trident. The man did not reply to the armed guards' threats of removal and unleashed a shockwave of destructive power that blew the gates open. Seemingly out of nowhere, mercenaries and beasts began flooding the castle city and amidst the chaos, the sorcerer calmly walked in a straight line toward the royal chamber. Seeing this, Zelda sent out her nursemaid Impa with the Triforce of Wisdom, fragmented into eight pieces moments before the attack. The Sorcerer, making himself known as Ganon, seized the Triforce of Power, sent his mercenaries after Impa and made Zelda his captive.
Spending the coming months in the confinement of the Ganon's fortress in Death Mountain, Zelda began to lose hope, fearing that her people would have to live in hiding for the rest of their lives and that she'd never escape. Zelda was fed to prolong Ganon's leverage over her, and was constantly pried for the whereabouts of the third Triforce. Zelda's claims of knowing nothing of the third relic only angered Ganon, leading to her being completely cut off. During a particularly dark day, a day that could have very well been her last, the princess heard a commotion on the other side of the stone door that sealed her tomb, culminating in what sounded like something very heavy toppling over. After this there was a period of unnerving silence. Much to Zelda's astonishment, the door opened, revealing the last thing she expected to see; a young boy clad in green.

I actually like this version of Zelda more than your other one. She’s somewhat more regal and less simple than the previous Zelda. One hell of an improvement, man.

Thanks! I wanted to give her a bit different of an appearance than the manual, and more off of her sprite.

I always like dark/red haired Zelda more than the typical blonde she has become. Your story that accompanies the picture is fantastic as well. All around, extremely well done.

Same! I like most of her designs, but the red hair is something that makes her stand apart a bit.
Thanks a ton!

What is even more tragic is that Zelda is the latest in line for 1 of thee most cursed bloodlines in history, with hyrule being invaded or destroyed multiple times, with her bloodline witnessing the trauma repeatedly

I'll have to see about posters/prints. Nintendo is very overcompensating when it comes to monetizing (or even free) fan-projects, so for now I'll probably have to tread lightly. :/

Pre-blonde Zelda? Woohoo!
Good job remembering to include the princess's headwear (even if it isn't donned on her at the moment).

Yeah!
I usually gravitate toward the first incarnations of characters, as over time they tend to lose some qualities that made them standout to begin with. (green-haired Samus anyone? )
Was going to have it on her to begin with, but her asymmetrical hair was making it a bit awkward. Put it on the floor to kind of hit the notion home that Zelda feels as though she failed her people, unfit to be their leader.

"Yeah!

Same here. Only on rare occasions do I place later revisions/re-imaginings at the top of my list when it comes to preference of aesthetics. Having said that, what *you* say gives me hope *if* you ever decide to do the characters of "The Adventure of Link" justice. There aren't too many incarnations of Zelda that didn't move forward with Nintendo's "Blonde Affirmative Action Initiative" (for lack of a better term).
"Was going to have it on her to begin with, but her asymmetrical hair was making it a bit awkward. Put it on the floor to kind of hit the notion home that Zelda feels as though she failed her people, unfit to be their leader."
Muchas gracias for the insight. We don't always pick up on these things, so the extra commentary is most welcome.

I don't think I'll do a full series like this one for AoL, at least in the near future (it's not completely off the table), but there are some enemies I'd like to take a shot at some time like the Lizard dudes (Daira or Geru) and the Iron Knuckle, among a few others! Perhaps older Link and Zelda too. Now, how many years roughly does AoL take place after LoZ? Probably at least a few or several, seeing as though Link is a young adult.
After my Doom project, I want to take a bit of a break from these big fanart projects for a while, as much as I love doing 'em.

Here are some characters/beings that I think would benefit from your own artistic interpretation. I am going to assume you have beaten the game, as there will be spoilers.
* The young town ladies. Some of them heal Link. Others are quest givers.
* One of the retired Hylian soldiers from the last war that teaches Link martial arts maneuvers (such as the downward thrust).
* The river monster. We only ever see it as a sprite on the overworld map before it is vanquished (or driven away?) by the flute's music.
* The Phoenix. This creature's design is fairly unique, wouldn't you say?
* Dark/Shadow Link. The evil side of Link manifested into a distinct entity? Hell yes!

"Now, how many years roughly does AoL take place after LoZ?"
This series' chronology is all over the place. I found that keeping track of it post-Ocarina of Time was rather troublesome 8-^P.

Yeah! I'd be down for some more casual character pieces in the future, just not another entire project is all. (in fact, there's a big Zelda enemy collaboration going on, and I've claimed a couple of AoL enemies to give me an excuse to draw 'em. )
Now, by Phoenix, do you mean the Thunderbird?
Gotcha, I figured the LOZ timeline is very convoluted at this point. But, I do remember that LOZ and AOL take place in the same timeline (downfall?) so I think it's safe to say that it takes place at least a few years after the first game, considering it's the same Link.

Ah yes, yes I do. That was me mixing up Legend of Zelda with the broader classic fantasy genre.
Regardless, I eagerly anticipate viewing each visit that your mind's eye makes to the land of Hyrule.

Not a bad idea, making Zelda way older than Link than around the same age. Also see that you're taking a bit from Twilight Princess, having Ganon's assault mirror Zant's. Wasn't exactly expecting the red dress though, since her and Link share the same color palette for their clothing. Kinda appropriate in a way, I'm about to finish the original game for the first time: just have Lion and Death Mountain to go.

Yeah! Still not an adult, but around 6 years older than Link. I've actually never played TP all the way through, so it may just be a coincidence!
Her original sprite had the red dress and orange hair, so I thought to keep those intact.
Nice! Ganon's dungeon is the biggest by far, and those darn patras are pretty challenging.

Never played the game; read part of the manga, but loved how Link worked to avenge Zelda and recover the Triforce. But didn't Zelda later became Sheik the assassin?

Another beautiful piece. Her posture makes her look so defeated, the architecture rich yet imposing; precisely the sort of thing I envision every time I beat the game. A nice touch is the jewelry on the floor, adding to how she likely feels like a slave. Kind of tugs at your heartstrings.
Hey, perhaps when you're finished with your pieces on DOOM, is there any possibility of you doing some art based on the second game? I'd always kind of pictured Link as having grown up into a noble young knight, following his defeat of Ganon.

I'm likely going to take a break from fanart projects like these for a while once Doom is done, but I'd like to do a couple Zelda II pieces sometime (probably a few enemies, Link and Zelda as well). Committing to another full scale project might not be in the cards at this point in time (not completely off the table though), seeing as how long this one took.

guncraze In reply to Deimos-Remus [2017-03-09 06:08:45 +0000 UTC]
Very understandable. Mostly, I just like seeing other fans' interpretations of how the story continues, since there are very few Zelda games that act as direct sequels to other Zelda games; each one really stands on its own.
