Description
Underworld Enemy #10: Darknut"The knight who lives in the labyrinths. He has lots of attacking power. He repels Link's attacks from the front with his shield."
-The Legend of Zelda Manual
Hyrule is home to many skilled warriors and soldiers employed to protect the land and its sacred relic, the Triforce. When Ganon's forces invaded, a good deal of these men fled or were mercilessly slaughtered before they could do so. Among the top of Hyrule's royal military ranks are their heavily armed palace guards, meticulously trained in close combat with broadswords and shields. Ganon sought to corrupt these swordsmen and use them for his own purpose. With their lives spared, the guards were promised unfathomable riches and positions of high rank and power upon Ganon's seizure of the third and final Triforce. The guards initially resisted, but they were no match for the evil sorcerer's dark influence, and joined forces with their enemy. Though their distinct armor plating bears the royal insignia, these men were no longer recognizable as Hylian, their skin discolored and all semblance of humanity lost. As these unfortunate men were seen as traitors, they became despised by Hyrule's surviving populace and were given the derogative name 'Darknuts'. Patrolling the Underworld with iron fists, the Darknuts are perhaps Ganon's most formidable forces that wander the ancient labyrinths; smarter, stronger and more resilient than any beast.

I'll admit, I wasn't expecting the left arm to be bare, but then again, does it matter when that arm's covered by a shield?
Besides, it gives the armor a Roman appeal. And I feel it makes this Darknut one of a kind.

Yeah, wanted to show some of that human strength in there, and I'm sure with it being bare, it's a bit more mobile as well.
Definitely wanted a mix of Medieval Knight and Greco/Roman influence.

This looks great, I'd argue it's an improvement over the original design. Everything from the dark color palette to the regal appearance and the hint of dark, monstrous skin on the shield arm all make him an intimidating and fierce looking opponent. Between this and your other LoZ pieces, I would love to see you make a fantasy comic; the characters and creatures all look amazing and the lore you write makes me want to know more about your interpretation of Hyrule, even if I'm normally not that big of a Zelda fan. Keep up the great work, this is some downright fantastic stuff!

Thanks so much, I really appreciate that!
I've always had an affinity for horror, fantasy and sci-fi, but with Fantasy there just isn't as quality material much to draw from these days, there's Lord of the Rings, D&D, Game of Thrones, etc, but it isn't as much of a successful genre as the other two have gotten. So, whenever I do fantasy stuff, I tend to get into it a lot more, there's so much potential for lore and history, which has always fascinated me. As far as Zelda goes, I used to be in the same boat myself, I wasn't a huge fan of it, and even still, I'm not all that fond of the more recent titles, but there's something I love about being able to interpret the very limited information that comes along with older games, particularly from the 8-bit era, makes it a lot of fun to redesign and rewrite!

It's my pleasure, this looks amazing and I wanted to let you know how fantastic you did on this.
Yeah, Fantasy is surprisingly lacking in iconic storied. There's no fantasy equivalent to say, Isaac Asimov or really even Lovecraft despite drawing heavily from basic fundamentals of it at times. I hear you on the lore and history, I'm working on an idea for a sci-fi comic myself and aside from the main plot about a man and his two robotic helpers travelling a divided galaxy trying to raise his niece, I've developed other ideas for at least three other series and fifty solid years of story and events leading to how the main cast got where they are. I think the latest Zelda I played was Wind Waker or maybe Twilight Princess briefly, and I think my problem was that it felt like there was more story but they chose to leave it out to focus on gameplay which I can definitely respect, but it made me come to the conclusion that this series may not be for me. I'm very much the same way with old comic book characters, so many forgotten creations that are so weird and practically calling out for a second chance lol.

Interesting. What made you go with the asymmetrical upper limb armor design?

Thanks! I've always liked asymmetrical gladiator armor, but also because the Darknut's left arm (viewer's right) has the shield protecting it already, with less armor allowing for more mobility.

Coincidentally, it also gives the Darknut a touch of real (MANLY!) humanity. Normally, one could mistake them for fully buttoned-up and indefatigable automatons - or perhaps, simply, animated suits of armor - following their last bit of magical programming to defend whatever domain they patrol.
Not so here.

Yeah, for sure! Wanted them to definitely have been people at some point, even if their corruption has turned them into something else. Showing a little bit of skin was a good way to do it I think!

Oh man, that'd be a dreamjob!
No, I haven't! But, I may want to make this into a book when all is said and done, so we'll see how it goes!
Oh, and this is totally unrelated, but I still have that Alien Bar in progress, slowly chipping away at it when I can! I think the linework for most of the characters is done, just need to finish up the bar and color it up!
