Description
NPCs: Ganon the Sorcerer (pre-transformation)Hailing from a long-lost tribe from the desert, Ganon and his people were banished from Hyrule, upon their realization that one of the tribe's own descendants had nearly brought upon the realm's destruction generations prior. Consequently growing up in the desolate wastelands near Death Mountain, Ganon had made bringing justice to his tribe his ultimate goal in life. Starting from humble beginnings and learning from the tribe's shaman, Ganon found that using magic could, in given time, grant him what he sought. As Ganon became more talented and driven with the forces of magic and started to delve into the occult, more of Ganon's people passed on, and less of them believed he could actually do what he intended. With his motivations dwindling and his power and prowess growing, Ganon eventually lost sight of what he was fighting for to begin with, coming to realize what the use of dark magic could do for him.
Years passed, and Ganon's knowledge of occult magic grew stronger, and the procurement of fabled objects and weapons magnified his strength further. An enchanted trident said to have belonged to an undersea king became Ganon's staff, triplicating his output of destructive power. With much of the world's knowledge now known to him, Ganon's aging, dying mind resulted in changed goals. Reading of the great power contained within the triangular ancient runes known as the Triforce, Ganon sought to procure them in hopes of saving his frail and withering body. Securing the Triforce of Power and Wisdom, the sorcerer became more powerful and influential than ever before, but at the cost of his body rapidly changing to reflect what he had become; a monster motivated by an insatiable greed.

This might just be me having an aesthetic for powerful characters looking kinda young, but I’m personally not a fan of the Jaffar-esque Ganondorf design here. With the implications he was given in the first game, I always thought of him as a sly rogue, and then in every other game, his very first interaction with the triforce of power is what gave him an ominous, kingly presence. It’s absolutely a good design, just not one that says “Ganondorf” to me.

Sounds like Ganon wanted to avenge the honor of his tribe at first, but then he suffered TVTropes "Motive Decay" and just wanted power.

So is this a reboot or something?, cuz this totally contradicts existing continuity.

This is my total reimagining of the events of the first game.

This is honestly one of the best incarnations of Ganon I've seen, right up there with Wind Waker's Ganondorf. Really adore how seemingly feeble he appears which makes his transformation into the boar more terrifying, but he's still very sinister looking. Even his trident is not some overblown weapon but instead simply eerie appearing. The wardrobe is sick looking too, got a Jafar/Rasputin vibe from it (always a sucker for evil wizards in neat cloaked outfits).
The background is especially nice, gives the impression he's come from some distant land he's plagued and tainted with his slowly growing dark powers, and now is slowly trudging his was to Hyrule like a creeping darkness...

There's only ever been one Ganon (except that one time Miyamoto flipped the teatable in FSA).

Thanks a ton man! I've always liked to air on the side of subtlety rather than exaggeration, and looking to old historical weapons, clothing and objects has given me a lot of creative fuel for the kind of aesthetic I'm goin' for. Ditto on the Jafar and Rasputin vibe! Jafar was the first thing I thought of when I was brainstorming for Ganon's design, definitely wanted to go with something they hadn't really tried before. Also a bit of Gerudo influence to it as well without being too obvious.

I really like this concept of Ganon. Gives a sense of a man who once sought justice. Now has his vision corrupted by the magical forces he dabbled in. And lead to his lust for power for the sake of it.

Thanks! Definitely wanted to try and give his character more depth than just being an evil sorcerer bent on world domination.

Yet ANOTHER Legend of Zelda piece of yours where the clothing is the element I am most entranced by. As a nice side effect, the square-like nature of the design at the fringes makes me think of video games with low pixel counts...such as the NES entries in this fantastic franchise.

Yeah! Wanted to go for something that invoked feelings of the Gerudo, but not in an overtly obvious way. Always saving pictures of historical clothing and whatnot, gives me a nice reference library to be influenced by!

A cross between Christopher Lee's Saruman and Ganon's Hyrule wizard persona in Zelda A Link To The Past. Fantastic.

Depends on the piece, since this one had a relatively simple environment, maybe a couple of hours.

This turned out great! (As your art always is). I really love your choice for the color scheme, It evokes a lot of emotion. Also love the cloud, It works great for the composition, but the way it's flowing implies a man whose lost his soul with the color also implying the power thats replaced it. Also nice touch with the trident

Thanks buddy! The cloud was definitely influenced by Frazetta's 'Against the Gods' piece, it's so iconic!

I love the new backstory for your version of Ganondorf. I'd definitely recommend playing Wind Waker since Ganon is portrayed as more of a tragic anti-hero for his people rather than a generic evil villain like in all the other games.

Fantastic work. Absolutely love the sky, and the wisp of red cloud. The lighting overall is just so atmospheric. How about Ganon's eyes though. Really caught my attention. Also the backstory is fantastic... almost like a Sumerian king delving into the secrets of Atlantis. Love it!
