Description

Boss 5: Digdogger

"Big sea urchins. In spite of their big bodies, they shrivel up when attacked. But watch out! They come on pretty strong."

-The Legend of Zelda manual

Within the highest north areas of death mountain is a region not unlike the lost woods from the southwest. Similarly dubbed the lost hills, it is an area filled with air so thin, and so mind-altering, that it is known to drive any passerby to the brink of insanity and grant them the inability to discern the direction in which they are heading. It is in this general location that highland Lynels are the most common, feral and diseased, and exceptionally dangerous. At a lonely peak is an ancient acropolis carved into the mountain, containing a large hieroglyphic mural near the entrance inside. The mural displays a group of armed men fighting a giant lizard, believed to depict the slaying of a dragon by Hyrule’s early royal army, thousands of years ago. Though reliefs and images of lizards can be seen all over, the structure is said to house a shrine dedicated to an all-seeing eye and is believed to contain an enchanted instrument. The all-seeing eye was allegedly the most followed demon of centuries past, as it was perceived to be very wise. Due to this, the largest concentration of Gibdo are found within the temple, and it is one of the deepest sections of the underworld in all of Hyrule. In some of the lowest depths, the demon awaits, solitarily floating through the air, resembling a gargantuan sea-urchin with a lone eye at its center. In these depths, the air is nearly unbreathable and toxic, expelled through pores in the demon's skin. Completely covered in poisonous barbs, the monster's defense is nearly impenetrable, though it has one weakness; due to spending the past centuries in solitude and complete silence, any sounds it hears are magnified to the point of causing extreme pain.Β

Aww, to be honest this concept is a bit weaker compared to the original. I am missing the giant eye. It is way smaller in this one.

Nevertheless, great style again!

I thought having a giant eye competed too much with the large barbs on the body. Giving it a smaller eye has more of a sense of design hierarchy, at least in my opinion.Β

Thanks!Β

Definitely!

I can imagine a boss fight with this thing being really interesting though, if it hears everything so acutely, coupled with the gas in the air, Link might have to cough every now and then, giving away the player's position.Β

It is as if one of those many Zoomers that Samus Aran fought in Super Metroid took some steroids and hit the gym.

I never understood why it was called Digdogger. It was like they needed names for fantasy monsters and just started pulling them out of a hat.

It would certainly be an interesting boss fight against this iteration of the monster, anyway.

Yeah, the names were friggin' weird. Some of them sound really inspired and cool, like Aquamentus, but others like Digdogger and Manhandla are just straight up goofy as hell.Β

i think its because of the recorder link has and digdogger reacts to it so, i guess like a dog reacts to a dog whistle but where the hell does dig come from?

Yeah, I have no idea, haha.Β

It's interesting, some of the names changed when the game was localized in English, so their original Japanese names are quite a bit different.Β

Manhandla was called "Testitart" in Japan, and Darknut was "Tartnuc". Digdogger is the same in both versions however.Β

Huh, surprising to see dungeon 5 with an outdoor portion for the boss, but given the geography of the surroundings it would make for an interesting change of pace to the usual dungeons to have outside portions, I think A Link Before Time did that too (it being the last LoZ game I fondly remember). All that's missing from this scene however are those four dammed statues firing on you as you try and kill the separated mini-digs lol. Surprised you didn't make a note about having the concentration of Pols Voices bearing any significance in that stage, or how the flute was suppose to hurt them as well.
I always thought why couldn't you just shoot an arrow at that thing cause its in-game sprite just looked like a balloon to me, well seeing it like this makes more sense that arrows would just nik into the spines not piecing its body. Now I'm just picturing the sound of the flute causing it the bulge up and burst into a cloud of poison gas and the smaller ones emerging out, moving about more erratically spewing gouts of gas propelling em'. Makes me think of a Balloon Pod from Castelvania on steroids, or in D&D terms those Gas Spores: creaturespotlight.blogspot.com…
Great job m8!

It's still inside, just the gas is making the place look so much bigger, obscuring parts of the dungeon in the far background. Not sure exactly how it's being lit so well, but it's fantasy.

I did make note of its adversity to sound, but I had forgotten about the Pols Voice! And yeah, definitely getting a D&D vibe out of this one!Β

Thanks man!
