Description Boss #4: Gleeok

"A huge dragon that has 2 to 4 heads and spits out beams at Link. Heads that Link cuts off from its body fly around in the air."

-The Legend of Zelda Manual

On the second of the two islands situated in Lake Hylia is an exceptionally elaborate, decoratively carved jade and gem encrusted palace, its focal point a sculpted shape of a snake’s face whose gaping fanged mouth serves as its entrance. Within its finely detailed walls lives the youngest, and consequently most intelligent and sentient of the 6 demons; a tri-cephalic dragon with the name Gleeok. Gleeok is the only demon capable of speech, speaking in a dead language that only Ganon has been able to decipher. Waking Gleeok from its slumber, Ganon was met with much arrogance and a desire for something to do, as sleeping for millennia had made the boastful god bored. Ganon made a deal that appealed to the dragon's vanity; a worthy challenge. In exchange for protecting a Triforce shard, the dragon would be given the challenge of defending it from the hero that could reclaim it and the boasting rights if the warrior was to be killed. Gleeok is a legendary beast, known for slaying many knights and having a legion of followers to construct his palace. Not only is the dragon powerful and resilient, if one of its heads were to be cut off, it'd still have the power to bite, eerily floating around in search of prey.

I really like this! It's always a treat to find a dragon resembling the more monstrous things from older art that were just big, ugly chimeras of every animal the medieval Europeans didn't like. This take on Gleeok, with that thick tail, birdlike talons, tattered wings and weird dog-monkey heads, would have been right at home fighting a wandering knight in a medieval painting or in an ancient bestiary.

Yeah! Medieval Dragons are so much more interesting than the winged dinosaurs they've become in pop culture.

Whoah, this is awesome! I especially love the heads, very different for a dragon-type creature.

Yeah! Wanted to go for something that had a bit of that Chinese influence, but also of weird European dragons too.

Ha, was going to put one in there, but it kinda threw off the composition a bit.

That is SO AWESOME. Love the torn and splotched wings, and the details in the architecture. Somehow it reminds me of that famous illustration of the jabberwocky.

This is awesome! May I ask how you get it to look so detailed?

Deimos-Remus In reply to TerriblyJadedGamer [2017-01-15 00:49:18 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! I've found that it's just a matter of finding how detailed you want to go. It's not necessarily that adding detail is the hard part, but when to stop adding it, finding that balance.

As far as technique, I do look at a lot of specific artists' works when I'm drawing these, so as to imagine how they'd approach detail.

Yeah, it's kind of like keeping a visual library of techniques to refer to, especially for stuff that I have trouble with at times; simplifying plants, architecture, etc.

If you're ever in need of artist examples for how they draw certain things, I'd be more than happy to recommend some!

This is incredible.  I love when people reimagine retro enemies that were significant to me as a youngster, but which have mostly been forgotten.  I really appreciate this piece, and having it brighten up my evening.  Well done.

Friggn' awesome dude! Perfectly captured the western body with the eastern styled dragon head types! I even love the color background blend of the temple, and how he almost has a gargoyle poise above the domed arches (wings would be useless in there after all so they would look stunted), and I noticed all the serpent bas reliefs influenced by those freaky multi headed cobras I've seen like the mythological Hindi Nagas.
Now which dungeon had the 4-headed Gleeok? 7 or 8? I know you aren't likely to do "repeat" dungeon bosses, but with this guy I'm now picturing his father (possibly killed by him?) who's bigger but in fact undead, resurrected by Gannon's Wizrobe servants (if they were also in that dungeon, I don't remember), parts bloated and serpent necks rotted into bone like the White Dragon's of Castlevania. And even some held together by masses of worms/centipedes, showing two of the heads severed and floating with their eyes white and sunken in. If your scene didn't have such a stellar environment to marvel at I'd complain for the lack of a floating head here LOL.
As always, looking forward to the next monster!

Thanks man!

I think it's probably number 8, 7 is the repeat Aquamentus. Love your description of a possible 4 headed one! Nice and morbid too!

Ha, I had the head floating in there but it kinda threw off the composition a bit, so I left it out. Reminds me a lot of Princess Mononoke with the wolf head, really creepy idea when you think about it!

Yeah! Digdogger's next, looking forward to drawing it up!

theblock In reply to Deimos-Remus [2017-01-12 10:50:51 +0000 UTC]

He, the wriggling mass of worms from Princess Mononoke too was an image conjured up when thinking of the undead Gleeok holding it together in parts ,as well as the wolfish head of the Dragon boy inSpirited away. The description of his personality also made me think of another (I think Slavic) mytholigical dragon the Gorynych, as described in the Pathfinder Bestiary 3 book anyway.

Deimos-Remus In reply to theblock [2017-01-25 21:10:40 +0000 UTC]

Yeah, definitely!

The Gorynych feels like it could have very well been an influence on Ghidorah, which in turn was a very likely influence on Gleeok!
