Description
Main Characters: Link
With his parents killed by a band of marauders, Link learned from a young age to fend for himself and survive. Initially resorting to a life of stealing food and finding shelter in unlikely places, the boy eventually taught himself to hunt, scavenge and live off what the land provides for its inhabitants. Though mostly illiterate from living in the wild, the boy was found to be highly efficient in his ways, brimming with ingenuity and exceptionally skilled in combat for a child. While traversing an old, moist cave on the eastern coast of the Hylian Sea, a reflective glimmer of light caught Link's attention. Sitting at the bottom of a reasonably deep and stagnant pool of water within the cave was the source of the light, a peculiar object, a vaguely triangular rune inscribed with a foreign symbol. Diving in and retrieving the stone, Link found that the object was nothing short of magical, endlessly captivating him and stowed it away in his pack. Carrying the object with him since that day forward, the boy developed a sense of courage and fearlessness like no other. South of Lake Hylia, while hunting for his next meal one day, Link heard a call of distress. Seeing an elderly woman being attacked by mercenaries reminded Link of his parents and he jumped in to the skirmish. Laughing at the small boy's gaul, the mercenaries were swiftly disposed of while the woman watched in astonishment. Introducing herself as Impa and telling Link of the danger Hyrule was in, she took him to talk at a nearby inn, just outside of Hyrule's capital town. Warning him of the powers of the dark sorcerer Ganon and of the Princess' capture, little did Link know he was about to be sent on a quest to save the realm and the princess all before he turned the age of eleven.

I liked that you didn't put Link in a more mature role, his backstory also explains well how a 10-year old would save a kingdom.

Now THIS, this is a good Link! (Is even hard to believe that he have only 10!)

i like that you gave him a reason why he never speaks

Yeah! Not necessarily incapable of speech, but rather someone who hasn't the need (or had many opportunities) for speaking much. I'd probably see him as someone capable of rudimentary sentences, but not much more than that.

Link's 10 in the original Legend of Zelda, right?
Other than that, this is amazing--that, and Link finding what I'm assuming is the Triforce of Courage in a cave? I've always wondered about that, thanks!

This is mostly non-canonical, inspired by the manual's description of events, used as a launching off point.
Thanks!

Always loved seeing reinterpreted designs of the original NES games.

Same! Gives a kind of blank-slate to go from, making designs from artist to artist wildly different.

Seriously man, this piece is perfect. Link in running through the wilderness, sword and shield at the ready, hideous creatures creatures descending on him from all angles... The color palette is perfect... the same awesome sandy yellows from title screen and the ground from the overworld... Love the hair, the eyes... the design of his outfit and gear. Plus you gotta have Octorocks... seriously man this series has been incredible.... just fantastically illustrated and wonderfully conceptualized... from the text to the images. Love it!

Probably said this before, but as a kid upon seeing the NES manual artwork, I thought link was a girl-elf. The hair, the "anime"ish eyes wasn't something I was used to back then, perhaps if I saw Nausica (or Warriors of the Wind as it was called in the US release) I'd probably get were the design inspirations came from LOL. Like that you gave him more severe narrowed eyes here.
I really like the back story, making him almost a feral child fending for himself. Makes me think of a "tutorial" prologue portion of the game where he'd use improvised versions of the boomerang and bow & arrow for mechanics before finding the cave with the old man giving you the sword. The Octorocs lurking on the stone outcroppings are a great touch too, maybe he really DID kill and cook them for meat (insert CDI cut-scene reference here). Great job

Thanks a ton man! The feral kid angle just kind of made sense to me, and a nod (forest boy) to OoT's Kokiri a bit without being referential to it.
Played a little bit of BotW at a friend's place, and there's a fair share of foraging for food and whatnot. There's even an island challenge where it forces the player to start with an empty inventory and use foraging and ingenuity to wipe the island clean of enemies. Love that touch, it really adds another dynamic to Link's character!

Oh man that looks amazing! I love how you incorporated his old hair and hair color into this. Few games seem to have him with orange hair nowadays so it's neat that you worked in his old design here

The style is reminiscent of the artwork in certain Tarot decks. Wouldn't it be fun to create a new deck using main characters in the major arcana?

Thanks! The idea was to have the magical sword in this one, the white one is pictured in the 'Weapons' piece, and the wooden sword is seen with the Old Man.

I see. I recall Nintendo went that route when they first made the game. I honestly like that idea but the concept of a chosen one sound epic too.

What else can I say but "unique"?
The emblem displayed upon the shield is unique.
The sword's hilt and, more specifically, pommel, is unique.
The boots are...well hell, you know my opinion aboutthem already .
One minor detail concerning this Link's getup that stands out is the straps. These are an element of realistic adventuring pragmatism which are often (if not entirely) absent from whatever official artistic depiction of the wielder of the Triforce of Courage is the current one. I suppose that when you can shift the burden of weight onto hammerspace, you can focus on looking athletic and dashing without a trusty haversack being in the way.

Definitely looked at a lot of norse costumery for Link, hence the hardiness to his get-up!

Anyhow, I don't know why, but...i've recently come to see Central European influences in the The Legend of Zelda series.

Yeah, haha. I tend to take a day to respond to a big buildup of comments. I should get used to doing it more consistently.
For sure! Lots of germanic influences from what I can tell!
