Description
Boss #3: Manhandla
"A large man-eating flower with hands sticking out in all four directions. it moves faster as it loses its hands. It's pretty mean. So, watch out!"
-The Legend of Zelda manual
In the far southwestern reaches of Hyrule lie the infamous lost woods, a strange and bizarre forest known to confuse and disorient those who dare to enter, its trees bestowed with a sense of feeling alive and somehow prone to taunting its inhabitants. Within the wooded labyrinth is an ancient and humbly constructed limestone mausoleum covered in vines and moss, within it a lone stone coffin with the image of a Manji carved onto its surface. The Manji image traditionally comes with the meanings of success and peace, and the grave is believed to have once housed the body of a peaceful forest sage. It has since been repurposed by Ganon as another underworld fortress, to be used as a home for one of the ancient demons he resurrected. Lifting off the stone tablet that conceals the coffinβs contents reveals a hidden staircase descending below the surface, leading to a network of plant-covered rooms, tunnels and passageways, haunting and unusually silent. The demon lord that lives within its walls is an abomination, a heaping mass of plant-like tendrils, with gaping claw-like maws at their tips. The beast has completely taken over the once sacred site, its body indistinguishable from the vines and plant life that choke the already dilapidated stonework.Β

Ever notice how it's name sounds like "Man-Handler"? I guess that's fitting, since it's willing to Man-Handle anyone who gets in its lair.

Yep! Nintendo used to be pretty tongue-in-cheek when naming their characters and whatnot. That said, Manhandla is the name given to the western-localized version of the boss. According to 'Legends of Localization', the boss was called "Testitart" in Japan:

I like the subtle map of the labyrinth above the door. Β It's not a swastika, it's a manji!

Yup!
It's funny, because that symbol has gained such a tainted meaning in western culture, I'm honestly surprised Nintendo of America didn't change it to something else for the American and European versions of the game. They changed less potentially 'offensive' things in the game, like the Bible, which always struck me as odd.Β

Thanks a ton!
These have been totally digital. Been using Kyle Webster's great watercolor brushes, they work surprisingly well to mimic the real thing!

Hah! Now instead of some blue, four-headed Piranha plant moving independent from any pipes, it's now like a fusion of Plant 42 and Deep Rising movie So I take it that heads would randomly pop out form the walls in some rooms to attack you and you need to track down the plant's core which is blocking the Tri-Force room? I'd be cool too if since the "heads" have a tremorsense it doesn't distinguish friend from foe so it will snap at other denizens too.
Β Also I'm assuming the surroundings are based off that ancient temple in southeast Asia (I don't remember the name but used in so many movies/video games)? Also that new Lab Zero prototype demo Indivisible is set in a dungeon that looks like this, so excited for that one too, especially since they secured the music composer who did the soundtrack to Secret of Mana, my all-time favorite SNES game.
Also like the homage to the Manji mentioned, since I was a bit baffled as a kid why that dungeon was shaped like a swastika, prior to me knowing the history of that symbol before the Nazis tainted it. Anyway great job ! Β

Yessir! It's be fun to actually make the boss almost be the environment in a sense, kind of like the Trash compactor from Star Wars or the Devil's Snare from Harry Potter. Would love to see Nintendo try something other than the tried formula of "hit boss, dodge attacks, hit boss, repeat till it gets faster, hit boss , etc".Β
Thanks as always!

Manhandla, alongside Dig Dogger, always struck me as being one of the sillier Zelda bosses. This version is far more intimidating, and would probably be more fun to fight as a boss.

Same! And their names are pretty goofy too of course.Β
Would love to see a different take on how these bosses could be fought in future games, but I don't think Nintendo will ever bring these guys back.Β

Thanks man! It's funny, when I played this for the first time, I thought it was something like a four-armed/headed crab-like thing. Wasn't until I read the manual that it was supposed to be plant-like. But yeah, this guy had the biggest opportunity to be very Lovecraft influenced!Β

Thanks again man!
I don't want to toot my own horn, but seeing a new Zelda game that took more of a direction like this (or something similarly handled, like 80s Sword and Sorcery fiction) would look pretty cool, and something very unlike how the games have looked for the past 30 years. Thinking along the lines of Dark Souls would be a really interesting take on the series!Β

Thanks! I always pictured some kind of crab-like thing with four heads, but thought it'd be interesting if it kind of became part of the environment. I can imagine a boss battle with this thing having Link try to distinguish what's the monster and what's just scenery, since everything is so plant/vine-like.Β

Yeah? Stephen King's "IT" comes to mind.
What makes this a greater monster is that there's nothing about it that you can really humanize. Even dragon-beasts and wolf-men have faces. Here...zilch.

Yup! The faceless aspect is what led Giger to make some design changes on the Alien before he fabricated the final costume, the lack of a face made it so much more disturbing and un-relatable.Β
