Description Since I have Veteran's day off tomorrow I wouldn't get to make a bento meal so I decided to compromise and turn the bento snack that I usually make today and make it into more of a bento meal. I've put a few things in that I haven't tried before and some old favorites that I haven't had in a while. This bento contains:

Top Layer:
2 Onigiri: Shisho (left) and Ebi (right) Furikake
Leeche Jelly with Little Spoon
Bunny Container with Ketchup
Bottle with Wasabi Shoyu

Bottom Layer:
Apple Bunny
3 Fried Shrimp
Pice of Nama Chikuwa (fish cake) Cut in Half and Stuffed With Cucumber Strips
Blueberries Sprinkled with Sugar
Green Tea Mochi

Please Enjoy~!

Wow that looks soooo delicious! Green tea mochi? I've never heard of that, how is it? My favorite is Red-bean mochi

Thank you, I find it to be quite appealing in flavor myself. Then again I am very taken with green tea.

I cannot say which type of mochi I like best. I've have a fair variety of flavors after all and each one is delicious in it's own way.

I'm a fan of onigiri. I love it because it was the first "fast food" in Japan

Sgt-Duckie [2011-01-16 23:36:48 +0000 UTC]

Everything in here looks so good~ Except the chikuwa. I can't stand any kind of ground fish product. Sadly I'm a busy student with 3 other people in my kitchen, so my bentos have to be practical as opposed to pretty. I usually wind up with "cram it in the box" bentos.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Demi-Plum In reply to Sgt-Duckie [2011-01-16 23:43:13 +0000 UTC]

That's how most of my bento are. I don't post every bento I make. I make about 5 a week. I only take photos of the ones that I've prettied up, or have no where to go so I have time to make them look nice. Most people don't make pretty bento all the time, unless they like getting up in the wee hours of the morning to do it, and I by any means have no intention of leaving my bed until I absolutely have to.
The chikuwa isn't bad. I enjoy fish cakes on occasion, but I don't eat them on a regular basis. They're something to be eaten rarely. Some are actually decent tasting, it just depends on where you get them and what kind they are.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sgt-Duckie In reply to Demi-Plum [2011-01-16 23:55:17 +0000 UTC]

Well, I was "coerced", shall I say, into tasting a variety while I was in Japan, and I've yet to find some I like. I also dislike surimi and fish sausage. It's like I have a little sensor in my mouth that goes "WEEEEEEwooooWEEEEEEEwooooo processed fish product ahead!" I love most other fish preparations, though.

I'm also getting better at putting things together, so even if my bento aren't super pretty they're definitely less haphazard.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Demi-Plum In reply to Sgt-Duckie [2011-01-16 23:59:35 +0000 UTC]

Haha well then that sounds like you just don't have a taste for it. Everyone has things they dislike. They're not my favorite I'll admit, but once in a while it's nice to remember.

That's great! The more you do them the easier it'll be. It's just what do you want to eat and what will fit >w<

Sgt-Duckie In reply to Demi-Plum [2011-01-19 19:59:51 +0000 UTC]

And then what I have time to prepare/ what will sit well for a few hours. I make bento to eat in the half hour space between my 5 hour studio class and my English class half an hour later.

Demi-Plum In reply to Sgt-Duckie [2011-01-19 20:13:12 +0000 UTC]

I eat during my studio classes on M/W. T/H I have a two hour break where I can eat. F I might bring something or I might not. It just depends on how hungry I feel that day haha.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Sgt-Duckie In reply to Demi-Plum [2011-01-19 20:16:02 +0000 UTC]

Oooh, lucky! We get only get a 15-20 minute break. I usually just have a snack to tide me over until I can eat between classes.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Demi-Plum In reply to Sgt-Duckie [2011-01-19 20:20:07 +0000 UTC]

My studios are 3 hours long. My shortest class is 2 hours. I just eat during class. I don't care. If I'm hungry then too bad. We're all like this though, designers are all the same.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Demi-Plum In reply to pirateluv [2010-11-12 04:27:57 +0000 UTC]

I try to eat as healthy as I can. Since last summer I really changed my eating habits. I've taken to eating more fruit and low calorie foods and go to the gym.
It depends on what kind of bento I pack. If I pack a full lunch bento I can be ready to eat a few hours after I get home. (I usually pack full bento's tuesday and thursday, I eat them at noon and I eat dinner around 6-7. I will sometimes have a snack, but it's usually something from the vending machine so I get away from my three hours studio). If I pack a snack bento I'm usually ready to eat by the time I get home (I make snack bento monday, wednesday, and friday, MW I eat them around 3:30 and I get home around 7:30 7:45. Fridays I eat them around noon and get home around 2:30 3.)
As long as you pack "sustainable" foods you'll last longer. So carbs, stick to your ribs kind of foods will help you to last longer throughout the day. My snack bentos usually have a lot of fruit and not too much in substantiality. My full bentos I make sure to pack something more substantial because they need to last me longer. Rice, noodles, potatoes, veggies are all good at keeping you held over. I'll try to remember to take a photo of my bento tomorrow (I'll be there longer so I'm making a full bento). I've got rice and some garlic tempura chicken for substance, and steamed asparagus with (i'll make something up tomorrow) sauce for healthy and filling, and for dessert I have some blueberries with sugar, azuki mochi, and a fruit candy.

hehe, thank you for explaining i always wondred if this meal would sustain you for a long time and if it filled you up.i've got horrible eating habits ,hopefully this will all change really soon since im forced to because im feeling sick all the time. the boyfriend is forcing me to eat better , he told me he is interested in this whole bento thing because he loves sushi lol and he wants to make "cool and funny food" to eat. like your under the sea bento i will be joining your group too ,i've been wearing the stuff u made me everywhere LOL

Oh of course! I love talking bento ^w^
To be honest my stomach has also shrunk since I've started bento. Make sure when you order a bento box that it's the correct size for you age and height wise. I eat about 100 mL less than recommended because that was how much my first bento held. I didn't realize about mL back then. Ever since then though I buy bento about the same size. Sometimes (for snack bento) I'll buy smaller or what not.
Eating healthy is only part of the problem, you should be exercising regularly. Trust me, I know it's not fun or something you want to do, but I know it makes me healthy and feel better and even look better which is why I continue to do it. I'm really lazy and hate exercising >w< Even just taking a 30 minute walk a couple of times a week is better than nothing!
Haha all my bento are what can I squeeze in?! I only do the pretty bento for contests or special occasions. I just don't have time otherwise I would more often!

Do you buy the mochi in a specialty store? I wouldn't know where to look for it! I would try making it but I'm afraid I would mess it up

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Demi-Plum In reply to BeCharming [2010-11-11 15:50:07 +0000 UTC]

I bought mine at Jungle Jims. Be careful which package you pick up though! Some of the mochi has over 300 calories! My first package of mochi has over 365 calories each and the mochi is less than half the size of the one you see here. That one has somewhere around 87.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BeCharming In reply to Demi-Plum [2010-11-11 17:42:46 +0000 UTC]

WOW I can't believe how crazy the calories can be!! I would love to try mochi some time. I have found recipes but don't know if I could pull it off. I believe we only have regular stores around here but I haven't really looked either. I will have to check into it more. Is it refrigerated or just on the shelf? I'm very interested in trying some new things I would go to Jungle Jims but it's an hour and half away from me

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Demi-Plum In reply to BeCharming [2010-11-11 18:34:46 +0000 UTC]

I know they can be sooo much.

Yes I've seen how to make them, I just simply don't have time to give it a try, especially when I can get it already made for myself.

In the japanese section it's on the shelf at jungle jims.
That sucks.... it's about 20 minutes away from me.

BeCharming In reply to Demi-Plum [2010-11-12 00:26:21 +0000 UTC]

You are lucky!! I will have to see what I can do about finding something closer :/ I really would like to try it some time! Everyone I hear talk about it says they enjoy eating it!

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Demi-Plum In reply to BeCharming [2010-11-12 00:31:57 +0000 UTC]

Honestly mochi will probably test your gag reflex the first time you try it. It's a very strange texture, but the more you eat the the more you will enjoy it.
You can probably buy them online as well.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

BeCharming In reply to Demi-Plum [2010-11-12 01:40:26 +0000 UTC]

Yea I have an issue with textures so I might not enjoy it but I am game to try anything really! I know there are all kinds of flavors but which one would you recommend? And is it the same as dango?
