Description
Whilst taking a break from finishing all my other things, I started something new.Which is pretty stupid really, it's what I'm NOT supposed to be doing.
But I'll never stifle those creative flows when they happen or I might end up with a dam and then I'll burst and it'd be all messy everywhere and stuff.
This started off as a vague doodle then became an excersise in light, shadow, tone and simplicity.
I don't know what part of my strange mind this cat came from but I'm glad it arrived from somewhere as I'm really pleased with the result and, again, it's something different from my usual style.
I'm beginning to wonder what my "style" is actually.
When I do get round to getting a print account this piece will be in it. Then I can buy it. Oh the vanity of it all.
Wacom, Paintshop Pro, Five Hours and Photoshop for the borders & text.
MY CAT LIKES TO STARE!

You know, I love the cat, it does look like some egyptian stone sculpture. But honestly, i think that the conversations regarding the cat and it's artist were at least half ias intruiging as the art!! As to your art, Maame Demonika, it is fanTAStik! absolutely wonderful. I am just beggining to touch on the digital art thing and I have NO IDEA how you do this, but you do it very, very well. (PS, love the subjects you choose, especially the Tori and Angie
ones!)

Alright... I am glad that you are starting to use doodles of your own as inspiration for work rather than references.. for it starts being more original, and gives ya more of a chance to slip so I can bash ya. (I am just teasing there in case someone can't tell )
As many others have mentioned, the smooth surface of the cat shines through... it feels like... like... not wood.. not plastic... but something like... Hmm... it strikes me like wax. Maybe it's just polished wood ^.^ (but then again, I doubt wood would have such a perfectly smooth surface with no texture-like patterns). Well... aside from that.. and the beautiful shape of the cat.. I think the best thing about the image is the fact that it started as a 2D doodle. And you gave DEPTH to it, not just depth, but a great sense of realism, and this is where your skill shine, even more than before by knowing there was no reference material for it other than your own imagination. I doubt anyone would ever be able to guess the original of this cat is but a doodle
Ok for some evil criticism... well there ain't much, the 3D-figurine is superb. In a true sculptured cat fashion, mayhap his front paws would also be firmly placed on the ground (the very front of them are definitely lifted from the ground), but I guess there's no real rule that these figurines should really have a flat base. I like the "aura" of shininess around the cat, altough I have to wonder what is the deciding factor behind it's behaviour. Rather than a static "constant" radio aura, it seems to vary on different areas... like around the ears... the aura is prolongued upwards.. and it also has a second-shade aura below (the second aura has a greenish feeling, and I can't see any traces of it anywhere else), and said reddish aura also prolongues down behind the cat's back. Nah.. don't take me wrong; I am stating that I LIKE that aura, I just am failing a bit to understand how it actually works... (if there is some kind of explanation to that, that is ). I am just curious like that
...and talking about curiosity.. where's the cat's tail? Is it that outline thing you see ont he base of the leg that curls up to the knee? if so, this cat was certainly done in a very ... um... high class way? (gee I suck at said terminology , I just know that cat would be refined and of high class indeed)

YAY for doodle gladness!
I wanted a very subtle haze around the figure, hence the aura, it's not constant and I like that, because you think it should be constant but it isn't, haaaaaah HAH!
Again with the close-up-ness of viewing art on a monitor you can clearly see where the aura is and where it isn't.
I printed this piece out tonight and when looking at it as if it was on a wall there's just a teeeeeny hint of a light glow in certain areas.
The tail does curve around the rear end and then up over the foot and the leg. The original doodle was pretty stylised and I liked that. I'm working on a portrait of my mental cat at the moment which will be as realistic as I can make it.
However mental he is, he's very pretty and it's fun working on fur, which I haven't done much of before.

You call fur "fun"? Ah... unbelieveable. Fur is infinitely more complicated than skin... but if you have fun with it, it is no wonder it comes out so good in the end

demonika In reply to Teufelkind [2004-09-16 23:44:33 +0000 UTC]
I did one by accident once, I started rambling about how I do my work in a journal and it ended up about 20 pages long. It was very annoying to read and not much help to people as there were no pictures.
Don't you hate books without pictures?
Anyways, I deleted that entry as it was far too time consuming to read, I keep meaning to do a tutorial but then I never get round to it. There was a recent daily deviation that was a painting tutorial, it's actually very similar to the way I work. Sometimes. It's hard as I change my techniques quite a lot, often to suit the piece I'm working on and other times because I just feel like it.
One day I'll get round to doing one. Right after I've finished thi.....

Thanks
I didn't have any definite ideas about colour when I started this but it ended up being terracotta shades, I love them and find them very peaceful, relaxing and warm to look at.
One of these days I'm going to get round to re-decorating my bedroom in them. Instead of purple. It was nice at the time but it's a little too vivid for my taste now.
Oh the follies of youth! Even though it was only a couple of years ago, ahem.

lol! Thanks, the purple was a good idea at the time but it's not exactly a "restful and sleep inducing" purple.
I have nothing against purple, it's one of my favourite colours, but the bedroom needs toning down a little

It's just like a photo! (I thought it was a sculpture too, like above)... The light, the texture, it's great! You did great with the variations of the color values..., variations in saturation and bright of the same hue, I guess.
Simple, yes, but very well developed. I love the way you manage textures (specially opaque and metallic textures).

Thank you
I did try out some other colour versions by messing about with hues/saturations, got some quite cool psychadelic results but they made me eyes water to look at so I thought it might be a good idea to leave it alone and let it stay clean and simple.

Awwwwwwwwww! That's so cute
This piece reminds me a little of my dad's cat, she's incredibly dim but really affectionate and sweet. She just sits there and stares at absolutely nothing.
But sometimes she suddenly freaks out for no reason and starts running around everywhere in a crazy way, which makes me jump.
Thanks so much for taking the time to view my work and for leaving such a nice comment

It's a cat... by Kat! har har har... yes.
Strikes me as Egyptian... not sure why exactly though.
IT's very swish though. I'd buy that for the house, certainly.

demonika In reply to inthesea [2004-09-10 11:31:20 +0000 UTC]
LOL!!!
I knew someone was going to do that
I think it's the stylised curves and the angle of the head that make it seem Egyptian.
It wasn't really an intentional thing as I was just randomly doodling when the cat happened and I thought oooh purty cat type thing, lemme at it with an AIRBRUSH!
Things that are really smooth are my second favourite things.
Nothing can beat shiny stuff as my first though.
How deep is that?

Yes....
Silver things, glass things, gold things, smooth things, round things, SHINY things.
I chase all these things and keep them in my nest.
Sometimes I wish I had the speed of a cheetah to go with my Magpie powers then I could catch SILVER CARS!
But I'd have to get a bigger nest, or one with a garage.

MEH!!
I give up *sulks*. I've stared and stared, I've squinted, gone crosseyed and I still can't see it.
I guess it must be like those magic eye pictures, I was given a whole book of those as a present once but I couldn't see a single one of them. I felt really bad so I lied and said I could see a Dolphin, because something vaguely looked like a Dolphin in the picture.
My friend thought I was mad because it was supposed to be a clown or a ball or some kind of sheep and they could see it perfectly.
Or.... maybe you just really like naked ladies and you're seeing what you want to see? H'mmm
π: 0 β©: 1
freaktrigger In reply to demonika [2004-09-11 03:10:58 +0000 UTC]
thats a possible explanation...
i actually did, and still can see it though...
ever since i was very young ive had the ability to totally unfocus my eyes - to relax the way they bond together, so i can do magic eyes without the whole "book to your nose" thing, i can jsut look at them and see the picture straight away, all the time...
go me!
