Description
My first sculpture in wax.About 30 cm (1 foot) high.
I'm considering bronze casting.
I would really appreciate detailed comments, in this stage modifications are easy.
Update: casted in bronze! [link]

Very beautiful, I knew right away what it was. I really love the curves in this piece.

The forms of the sculpture are harmonic. I really liked his work.

Too late.
It is casted in bronze and polished now. You can see the final result here. [link]
Most important changes: added an eye, changed the back and gave it a plinth in stone.
It got a Daily Deviation!
Thanks for the reaction.

Beautiful work. So graceful. Have you thought about having the tail longer and tapering a little

Thanks for the compliment.
In the final version [link] the tail is a bit longer, but not by much.
And the tail is only very slightly tapered there, a pointy version just didn't work for me.

The final looks awesome. The two tone effect really accentuates the cat quality. Great work. You're right seeing the final the tapering would have been a little much.

you've captured the attitude, grace, and general structure of a cat with just a few lines... really impressive... well thought out... and beautiful
"I've destroyed it in an effort to make it better." ...doncha hate that? but if we didn't try, we'd be training ourselves to be satisfied with making good but not great... (i'm mostly talking to myself, by the way
)
if you do remake it, i wouldn't change much... the overall form is pretty much flawless, i think it's just the little wobbles in the material that break it up for me... the head as well, though i can imagine it's hard to imply pointy ears on an otherwise curvy form -- and i can't decide whether i like the sharp edges or not
boy, it would look spectacular in bronze... do you think you'd have done anything special for the surface?

You're right about the wobbles, and they were already corrected, before it broke apart.
I've tried to forge it in steel, but as it was my first blacksmith attempt ever, I failed miserably. Way to many wobbles.
Anyway, I'm remaking it in wax.
If it does get cast in bronze, I'll polish the surface to get it as shiny as possible.
Thanks for the comment. You motivate me to get it finished.

Whoah.
Thanks.
But ... I've destroyed it in an effort to make it better. If the remake ever get casted I'll post it in my gallery.

Very nice work, the cat looks simple and delicate. Which is sometimes hard to do. Advice- the base throws the appeal of the flow off for second, maybe if you were able to square it off and create a flat surface to it like a neatly flat base to compliment the sculpture.

Good point.
I'm not sure yet how I'm gonna handle the base.

Excellent! I really like it.
As for suggestions...perhaps it could have pointier ears. Also, the tail might benefit from a more natural flow as it connects to it's body (much like the rest of the sculpture).

Your suggestions are appreciated.
As for the ears: I tried to make them more distinctive but the general flow of the lines got lost. I'll try again.
Making the tail more natural... I guess you mean not curling upwards at the end. It does look a bit like a pig, doesn't it?
I'll have a go at the tail as well, but I'm afraid to get lost in details and lose the general ambiance. I tried to catch the grace and coolness of a cat, without actually making a detailed cat. This is probably the best I'm able to at the moment.

Actually I like the way the tail curls at the end. I was actually referring to the way it connects to the body. However, feel free to disregard what I say. I really don't know all that much.

Oh, I see. Can't change that I'm afraid.

I don't think Grumzz has a cat.
The angle of the head is fine. A cat tilts his head just like that in order to listen or prepare to clean itself.
I'm amazed you can capture form so well with so little.

btw I really think this would be great cast in bronze; but I would roughen the surface before you cast it.. it will give a bit of a texture to the sculpture, to make it look furry
or maybe perfectly smooth looks cool too.. hmm
maybe you should do both and make them mirrored, and put em next to eachother ^^
(ok, just random ramblings here.. )

Patchco In reply to Grumzz [2009-10-19 22:08:51 +0000 UTC]
Well, I was going for the second option, the smooth/shiny look.
Later this year, I'll have blacksmith lessons and I'll try to make this in sheets of steel.
I turned the head in an attempt to make the cat more arrogant and cool. (You know the saying "Dogs have bosses, cats have staff." )
If you feel it looks depressed, I missed my goal.

hmm looking down is a sign of sadness, mostly.
looking up can give an air of 'highness' and cheerfullness..
it's still your work of art, and I think it's beautiful whether the head is up or down

Grumzz [2009-10-19 21:54:25 +0000 UTC]
that is so simple yet beautiful
it really captures a cat's grace
I just don't really like the head yet, it looks like the cat is looking sad/down
the body is great though, as the person above me said, the grace is perfect from every perspective!
