Description
This is one of my biggest projects as of now. An in-depth guide to the basic creation of a realistic planet in Photoshop. The tutorial is aimed at beginners with decent knowledge of PS, but if there is anything you dont understand or i didnt make clear enough, please feel free to note me or email me (skqwashy@hotmail.com)A HUGE thanks goes out once again to my good friend ~Crosseout who took my jumble of text and screenshots and turned them into this flawless presentation. I couldnt have done it with out you bud.
I know there are a lot of planet tutorials out there already, but I have read many of them and tried to combine them into the method that works best for me. The techniques are even changing, so hopefully there is something new in here for everyone. And if this is your first attempt at a planet, my biggest advice is to keep at it. Ive made hundreds and hundreds of planets before they came out even close to what i wanted.
If there is anything i missed, or anything that doesnt make sence, just drop me a note. I would love to see what you guys come up with so send me a link too. Other than that, have fun, and enjoy yourself.
P.S. Sorry for all of the typos
EDIT: holy god!

Great tutorial, I'm new to photoshop and space art, and still I've been able to do quite a bit thanks to your instructions. One question, for the concave light effects, how do I get to the lighting filter? Thanks.

DemosthenesVoice In reply to PLaris [2009-03-30 04:19:44 +0000 UTC]
the lighting effects filter is in the filter menu under render (filter->render->lighting effects)
but ive only worked on CS2 and higher, so i dont know if its in any of the older versions

The only thing is, after looking at tons of tutorials, I'm still having some trouble finding good textures that I like. Is there any way you can help me a little more privately? I can email you or something if you would like to help me out

After reading through it, I loved it but there is the major thing missing, as in how to create the planet ?
You showed us amazing the texture, colours, lights, atmosphere and all that, but what happen to the planet xD
And I'm kinda nooby, hence my question But I got it reading other tutorial, just though I would tell you

what do you mean, how to create the planet? explain more please

Sangiev In reply to DemosthenesVoice [2009-01-19 11:51:01 +0000 UTC]
I guess I didn't make much sense. You know other tutorial, usually tells you how to start make a circle and blah blah, how to actually get the texture on that planet. But yours was unique so it's all good

wow this is sweet! but how do u drag the textures into photoshop?
👍: 0 ⏩: 1
DemosthenesVoice In reply to stan91 [2008-12-23 19:16:39 +0000 UTC]
open the jpeg image in photoshop and use the move tool to drag it into your planet texture document. if you download it from the net, make sure you zoom in tot he full size, right click, save image, and save it in a texture folder or something. then you can just open it in PS.

Wow! This is absolutely amazing. I really could have used this when I went through my space phase. Unfortuanately, I never had anything so indepth. I'm fairly certain my pieces would have turned out far more intricate had I had access to this. LOL
Anyway, amazing work. I might have to try out another space scene... or 4.
