Description
This is one of my biggest projects as of now. An in-depth guide to the basic creation of a realistic planet in Photoshop. The tutorial is aimed at beginners with decent knowledge of PS, but if there is anything you dont understand or i didnt make clear enough, please feel free to note me or email me (skqwashy@hotmail.com)A HUGE thanks goes out once again to my good friend ~Crosseout who took my jumble of text and screenshots and turned them into this flawless presentation. I couldnt have done it with out you bud.
I know there are a lot of planet tutorials out there already, but I have read many of them and tried to combine them into the method that works best for me. The techniques are even changing, so hopefully there is something new in here for everyone. And if this is your first attempt at a planet, my biggest advice is to keep at it. Ive made hundreds and hundreds of planets before they came out even close to what i wanted.
If there is anything i missed, or anything that doesnt make sence, just drop me a note. I would love to see what you guys come up with so send me a link too. Other than that, have fun, and enjoy yourself.
P.S. Sorry for all of the typos
EDIT: holy god!

What if you wanted to make continents out of the textures, or oceans? I use the cloud+Note-Pad Filter but it just makes it look terrible.

Hi I have a question...I've been fooling around with planet making and space scenes for a project I'm working on. I'm pretty much doing ok on the composition part so far, but I have a little bit of a problem. I was wondering if you could help. Whenever I spherize any texture in photoshop, I get a strange effect around the edges of the sphere...it's a sort of pixelation or tearing which I don't know how to fix. Have you encountered this? Can you help?

Amazing tutorial, but I can't find any good satellite images. That MODIS site is what I used and it ended up being LQ/blurry. Where did you get yours?

DemosthenesVoice In reply to 8mileroad [2010-05-28 02:05:40 +0000 UTC]
i use modis, you just have to make sure your working at the right resolution. the textures should be HUGE when you work with them, and they will look blurry then, but when yous cale it down it will start to regain some of the lost resolution

WOW! Awesome tutorial! . It gave me a lot of ways to make planets. But... how'd you make the oceans and rivers? Is it simply brushing over the texture or something?
👍: 0 ⏩: 2
DemosthenesVoice In reply to RoseVoyager [2010-05-28 02:11:54 +0000 UTC]
mostly they come from the original textures i use.

wait, let me rephrase the first question. How did you make the oceans generally?
