Description A few tips, hints and thoughts for when a character is holding a big axe in a stance of readiness.

Figure A: The blade is rarely pointing up in the face of the character (unless he's examining it). Having the character standing in attention with the feet close together is ok but not for a battle stance. In short, point weapons in the right direction.

Figure B: The heavy blade of the axe is turned downwards. It looks more natural because that the direction it's used for chopping things it's also easier when the character don't have to fight gravity (that big heavy blade). The legs are further apart, giving the character a more believable stance and sense of balance. In short, it's a better pose.

Figure C: If more realism is a factor, a big axe is really heavy and a normal built person who have to struggle to hold, carry and wield it. But showing this also adds extra weight to the axe and it's potential as a lethal weapon even though the character may not look like a hero.

Figure D: On the topic of realism an axe don't need to be bigger to be a lethal weapon. More emphasis has been placed on the posture of the character. This one looks ready to fight compared to Figure C or Figure B.
