Description
Remember the tattooed design-a-ponys that came out not too long ago? [link]Well, I removed the tattoos, then went for a more show-accurate appearance. I think they cleaned up pretty nice, don't you?
If I ever feel ambitious enough, I may attempt to draw the cutie marks on the opposite sides.
Also, this month marks my 1 year as a brony. Yeah!
Tattoo remover: Goof Off [link]
Paint used: Tamiya Color Acrylic model paint [link]
Time spent: 6 hours (for both)
PS, I'm not entirely pleased with the color i used on Dashie's wings, but it will have to do for now.. may fix later. **UPDATE!! FIXED!**--> [link]

For the mane, I used only gloss pink. I don't think I needed to mix it. The wings however, I used gloss yellow and mixed it with flat White to try and match the finish of the body.

Ugh. These are so good DX I bought a design-a Fluttershy with the intent to clean her up as well. I hope I can get her to look nice although I've never done this before 8D; At least now I know it IS possible to make her look nice!
Can you remove her tattoos with nail polish remover? I'm not American and can't get 'Goof off'. I just wanted to ask since I don't want to damage her.

Thanks, I'm glad you like them.
Nail Polish usually contains Acetone, which is theΒ main ingredient of Goof-Off. If I were you, I would dab some underneath her hoof and let it sit for a few seconds, then wipe it off. If there appears to be no damage/discoloration/shine left behind, you should be safe. Just be careful around the eyes and cutie mark, as they will also wipe off.
Good luck, I hope this helps you!

Ooooh I love it. Apolgese if this question has already been asked but what other things can I use instead of goof off to remove the tattoos? Ive seen someone use nailvarnish remover but it leaves a black stain/smudge. I dont think I can get hold of goof off which is why I as

Hmm, when I first used the goof off, it left a stain, but it would come off with more goof off. Maybe just need to apply more nailvarnish remover...
and always make sure you test it on a hidden area first to make sure you don't damage the plastic.
Sorry for the delay,Β I was on holidays and didn't check my messages, I hope this helps!

I've just bought some paint to try this! do you have a method for painting between dashs' wings and mane? It's a very small gap!
π: 0 β©: 1
DerpyMadness In reply to HustlerSophie [2014-04-19 21:33:46 +0000 UTC]
Nope, just a small brush and a very steady hand

I am thinking about doing the same thing with Fluttershy. Could you give me (the total newbie to this) pointers how you removed the tattoos, and what kind of paint you used?
π: 0 β©: 1
DerpyMadness In reply to Smudge-Proof [2014-01-07 07:21:19 +0000 UTC]
As described above, I used Goof Off, which is an Acetone-based paint/glue remover solution dabbed onto a paper towel (or q-tip, depending on where the tattoo was). keep in mind the solution WILL remove any kind of paint on the figure (Tattoos, cutie mark, eyes) so be careful around them. The body isΒ colored plastic, so the solution shouldn't hurt the coloring (test on the bottom of the hoof or something first).
As for painting, I used Tamiya Color acrylicΒ model paint (though I'm sure any decent acrylic paint will do). I usedΒ plain gloss paint for the mane/tail, and a flat/satin paint for the wings. To get the right coloring, it was trial-and-error. Just mix white with yellow and play with it. I used a very fine tip brush and a steady hand to paint.
Hope this helps!

Thanks. Sorry about the remover part, I have missed it in the description. How did you manage to match the shade of the paint yellow to the wings?
π: 0 β©: 1
DerpyMadness In reply to Smudge-Proof [2014-01-07 17:46:22 +0000 UTC]
just mix white with the yellow until proper shade is achieved. Keep in mind, however, that paint always appears lighter until it dries and darkens up. When trying to match the wings, mix the paint until it is slightly lighter than the body color, then when it dries it should be close. It is mostly trial and error. Look at rainbow dash, I had to paint her wings twice and it still didn't look right. I waited awhile and did it again, seen here: derpymadness.deviantart.com/arβ¦Β (On the picture it still doesn't look right, but in person itΒ looks flawless).

Wow, these look AMAZING! I've seen the ones with the tattoos in the store, they honestly aren't that grand... But this looks awesome, you got the mane and tail extremely detailed on Rainbow Dash, and on Fluttershy, the mane is the EXACT color. Great job!

Thank you! I will actually be updating the rainbow dash one this week, I find the green is too dark and the wings don't quite match up to the body color.

Thanks, I actually got them for the Fluttershy as well, seeing as I already have the Funko Rainbow Dash Vinyl figure. After I finished painting Fluttershy, I looked at Dash and figured, why not?
You can never have too many Rainbow Dashes.

I only painted on the white parts (mane, tail, and wings), the tattoos washed off with Goof Off. The bodies are colored, molded plastic so no need to paint them. The eyes and cutie marks were already on them.

This is great! I've been wanting to do this since these came out. I found it impossible to find proper paint colors though. Tamiya seems to be acrylic. I thought you were supposed to use enamel for this kind of stuff? Did you use the X24 Clear Yellow for Fluttershy?
π: 0 β©: 1
DerpyMadness In reply to ob2kenobi [2013-02-07 02:50:21 +0000 UTC]
Actually the Acrylic turned out to be perfect for this application, set up nice and shiny. I had trouble finding proper colors as well, i had to mix a few to get them to work. As for Fluttershy, I simply used the flat yellow and mixed with flat white to achieve desired color.

Nice work! I see what you mean about Rainbow Dash's wing color being a little bit off, but it isn't that bad.
So Goof Off worked on the tattoos? Hmmm, I may have to consider buying these after all...
