This is just a colored sketch I did for fun. I have a kinda mild obsession with redesigning certain super hero costumes and Superman in particular.I love drawing Supes, and love his basic costume, but I honestly think that that love of the design comes out of nostalgia and it's status as an icon more than it does out of the actual design itself. It's kinda like the Coca Cola logo. It's not that it's PERFECT, but that it's been so big for so long that it's somewhat enshrined in our minds as untouchable. The Coke logo, if you really think about it, is antiquated, clumsy and tricky to read. If you were a designer pitching that logo design to a client in modern America in some alternate reality where Coca Cola never existed, I'm willing to be it would be shot down in the first round of designs. Frankly, I think the same thing is true of Superman's costume.
Not that I'm saying that I've topped it... but for some reason, I love trying. Go fig.

I agree so much. I always use my own costume designs when I draw Dc or Marvel because a lot of the designs are antiquated.

I like there being a calmer color like black in the design -- the bright primary colors are a bit much sometimes, methinks. ^^

I see Kon wearing something like this rather than Clark. It's be cool that if we ever were to change from the shirt and jeans that he'd wear something like this.
