Description
I don't really know what to say about this portrait. It gave me courage to experiment a bit with colours, and I kind of like the result. She is not very expressive or artsy, but to me she's a tiny success. At least I drew something I like today.Related content

The expression is spot on. As is the use of light and shadow, like a shadow of mistrust has descended on her, or is growing in her and the outer world is reflecting the darkening that is going on inside, the mistrust intensifying, solidifying, gaining smoldering anger as it grows. Even the hair is expressing the intensity of her mistrust, gives the image even more energy. This is not a calm suspicion, but a mistrust that is sensing betrayal and is not happy about that! My only negative critique about this is her right side of the mouth, a black line that just looks like a hole in the canvas or someone made a small mark with a marker. It is a bit distracting, but only after you finish being drawn in by the expression, where you can start noticing other details.

Thank you. They are kind of disproportionately big.

Nah, I know people with big eyes. She has bags under her eyes, maybe tiredness caused by her mistrust and that can make the eyes look larger. I like the eyes in this portrait.

Very nice colors. I struggle using really dark colors.

I do too, but the nice thing is you can apply all sorts of correcting / shading layers. So I used that to my advantage. I applied a gradient layer, made it into a clipping mask and set it to "Multiply". I drew some more light in the background toΒ make the shading more credible. However, if you don't draw the right shading from the start, you might end up with shading mistakes, so it's a bit tricky. This is the original drawing:
