Today was my lucky day! I found this Eastern Box Turtle wandering on the same road I was on, so I asked him to pose for a moment.Related content

Thank you! I appreciate the , too. Isn't this guy beautifully painted? We used to have many, many turtles in our area, but civilization crept in and pushed the animals out. Turtles and frogs aren't too common around here any more!

I'm glad you enjoy my turtle. I try to take as many animal photos as possible...I have lots of birds, a few squirrels, a fox, chipmunk, and a bunny that I've posted in my gallery.

Ah ha! There's the turtle you told me about some time ago! I know just how you feel...I saw an echidna in my garden for the first time two days ago and spent a while pondering what to do because it was heading for the road! They 'retract' just like turtles and move at about the same speed, with their spines so sharp there's no way they can be picked up. They seem to dig their claws into any crevice as well to make sure that's the case. I followed it around for while and s/he ended up in my garage, at which point I gave up because really, there was nothing I could do except hope she didn't end up on the road. I haven't see any squashed echidnas so I think all is well.......amazing sight.

Yep, that's the turtle I hoped to capture on camera, and I did! I've definitely heard of echidnas, but never seen one, not even in the zoo. Hope you'll get a chance to capture one on camera.

Ain't he a cutie? I think his coloring is quite splendid! In fact, I don't recall seeing a Box Turtle quite as brightly colored as this little guy.

Thanks, Jenn. Yes, they surely are hard to find! I haven't seen one in many years. I was so elated when I saw this little guy...he didn't seem to be too afraid, though. I appreciate the . Glad you like this fine fellow!

Thank you! I really had hoped and prayed that I might see a turtle one more time before I die, and I got my wish yesterday. We used to see them in our garden all the time, but that was years ago, before the place got so built up and paved over. Now it's a genuine treat to see frogs and turtles! Box turtles vary a little bit in their coloring. I've never seen one with so much red on the front feet, but this guy was really colorful!

Thank you very much! He was crossing a roadway, so I picked him put and put him in a safer area; I figured he wouldn't mind if I took a few pics. Turtles move a lot faster than people think!

Honestly, I don't know what the difference is! I've always called them turtles, but maybe the correct term is tortoise. I dunno...I'm ignorant in this area.

My husband tells me that a turtle is amphibious and very fast when it wants to be, whereas a tortoise is a land animal that hates water and is very much slower. I knew there was a difference, but isn't it great to have a husband who knows EVERYTHING!!!! lol!

I guess then that the Box Turtle is really a tortoise. That's good information, Anna; thanks for telling me!

Thank you....I'd like to think he was happy I moved him to a safe spot off the roadway (he was crossing the road when I picked him up), but he did scuttle off fairly quickly. I hate to see these turtles get hit by cars, and there were lots of cars out yesterday.

no, they don't, and I wouldn't want to see one run over. Sometimes you don't see them in the road until it's too late.

Thank you, Sailor. No, you sure don't. I used to see them ALL the time when we lived in a more rural setting. My dad had a garden and every year, the turtles would help themselves to the strawberries and any other ripe goodies they could find. I haven't seen a box turtle in some years now.

Beautiful lad, I've never seen them before. What a pretty pattern on his shell (do you say shell with turtles?)

Thank you! THey used to be very common around here, but over-building, too many roads, and the onslaught of human civilzation have all taken their toll on turtles....yep, it's called a shell. This guy had a fractured shell in the back (which doesn't show in this pic), but it looks like someone may have mended it back on somehow. I know that this has been done with wild turtles.

I love turtles! We used to have so many when our area was more rural, but they are becoming increasingly rare (much like frogs). He did retract for a few seconds, but then came back out and started "air swimming." He wasn't too scared, though!

Thank you, Peggy. Yes, they sure are rare around here. We really don't have much space left for turtles and frogs, but 50 years ago, they were quite common. I used to see them in our garden all the time, eating dad's strawberries. This really was a wonderful surprise!
