Description The beautiful red flushed eye of a gorgeous male Ornate Box turtle.
He was getting ready to dig down and start his winter hybernation when I saw him. I took several photos, but darned if he'd come out and say hi.
I came back the next day and found that he'd dug down...so I'll keep an eye on this area in the spring to see if I can find him again.

A blessed find, all freshwater and land amphibians and reptiles are in great decline due to poor water quality, habitat loss and pollution around the world. Keystone species like this are barometers for our own health.

more proof, shit.............I have noticed a decline as well, it tires me and saddens my heart, but inspires me look for solutions, but those solutions are so convoluted and difficult in regards to the present state of consumption and capitalism, it is so daunting..........

it's BEYOND daunting to me!
i had my son with me out in a wooded area near a lake...and we counted 13 water turtle shells in the area by the shoreline.....not from the turtles crawling out and dying...rather...from fishermen catching and killing them.
how do we fight people who think? a 'good turtle is a dead one'...or think that they all kill the food the humans are trying to catch? same issues with our reptiles too.

Jeeezzzzzzzzzzzzzzz, arrrghhhhhh...........What right do we have to kill any species integral to an ecosystem when we no longer need them for food? Besides our impact from the "industrial revolution" (oxymoron, fer shure) to kill any animal, or living creature because of a delusional superiority complex is disgusting to any person with empathy or knowledge of simple biologic and environmental concepts. Some people are simply a waste of good oxygen, and I hope that does not sound too harsh. It's the same argument that revolves around the Wolf, or Cougar, or Bear, or just name one.......a complete and utter disregard for living creatures shoes the sickness inherent in our world today, we must educate the children, like you do with yours, and enlighten the ignorant, as I try.

I just read inthe news today, 35+ states reporting salmanela(sp?) outbreaks from children who have pet turtles.
Didnt' we learn about that issue back in the 50/60/70's ????
Each summer, my son and i collect a group of critters...take them to the parks, and talk to the kids and families all there. it's amazing how much information they'll eat up. and sad all the WRONG info. they think they already know.
such as?
Box turtles do not go into LAKES....water turtles don't belong in FORESTS...

yes there are terrestrial turtles for sure, I am so happy to hear you do this, all it takes is information, people are so so so starved for the natural order of things, that even something as "trivial" as seeing a butterfly never before seen can change their life. Providing the correct info is so important, most of the bad info is from sound-bites on the news or advertising.........
