Description One of North America's giant millipedes...
I found this gorgeous creature curled up under an old trashed bookbag in the woods.
Usually I won't bother them as they secrete a toxin that can cause major irritation to my skin...so I just took it's photo an left it there.
These things are fairly harmless unless provoked...they eat vegitation and are often found in gardens and forests.
This fellow stretched full out was about 3 inches.

It can kill you with a tread of one of its feet... I'd hardly call that harmless.

I used to have a pet giant African millipede.
I named him Scaphiostreptus Paralis. At least I believe that was how the scientific name was spelled.
He was 11 inches long.

We just called him Scabby for short.

These are all over the place at my uncle's house... I think the biggest one i've personally seen was as big around as my thumb and about 6 or 7 inches long... Scared the hell out of me because i thought it was a snake

Once i realized it wasn't a snake I thought it was really cool looking. They really are very pretty though

Beautiful photo!

eewwww!!!!

it's marvellous! although composition wise i think that the right top corner is too bright and blue next to the center roll, pops out too much and personalyl i would retouch it to remove some stains and things, but this is very unique, i like it!

EEEP, a millipede deviation, oh my gosh!

Dude, seriously I saw this along the bottom of my messages page and literally exclaimed out loud; I LOVE millipedes! (*used to keep giant 'pedes as pets*) Anyway, aside from just the subject here this really is such a gorgeous photo... I absolutely adore the colors and the way you composed this shot, with the spirals meeting perfectly in the middle like that is lovely! Really, thanks so much for sharing this as it made my afternoon, and congrats on your DD!

I love these things For some reason I just find millepede's endearing, and the idea of a giant one especially so, even if it does produce psychotropic toxins in its skin.

Three inches?... Not a particularly big one then. I heart they can grow up to a foot long.

The African ones would often reach six inches, and they weren't teven the giant ones, which were much bigger!
