Description
The butterfly flies into thunderstorms just to feel something. The girl cut herself so that she might stop the feelings. A chance meting of two similar souls, both bearing scars.
They survey each other; and realise, they are not alone.
Mm, a very personal drawing for me... I want to give a butterfly. Have you heard of the Butterfly Project? It's an initiative intended to help stop self harm.
Butterfly Project rules:
1. When you feel like you want to cut, take a marker or pen and draw a butterfly wherever the self-harm occurs.
2. Name the butterfly after a loved one, or someone that really wants you to get better.
3. NO scrubbing the butterfly off.
4. If you cut before the butterfly is gone, it dies. If you don't cut, it lives.
5. Another person may draw them on you. These butterflies are extra special. Take good care of them.
6. Even if you don’t cut, feel free to draw a butterfly anyway, to show your support.
I didn't hear about this project till after I was out of my personal crisis, but I really like the idea, supporting yourself or/and friends though tough times. But I don't think its perfect. See number 4? Your butterfly dies if you cut. When I was at my worst point I know I couldn't look after myself let alone a butterfly, real or not.
So I drew this, to give a butterfly, her name is Hope, she wont die when you cut her, because she's been through it already. She is just there for you, on your skin, a reminder that you are not alone. I wish could draw Hope on every person who needs her; if this is you, please pick up a pen and draw her onto you from me. She is a big raggedy, far from perfect, but beautiful in her uniqueness, and kind in her heart, she doesn't judge you, she is just there with you, to remind you that however bad you feel there are others like you, and people who love you.
To feel so bad that you hurt yourself to feel better. It's terribly twisted logic and a horrible thing to experience... and actually some of the most common form of self harm is actually alcohol and drug abuse.
People do all sorts of things to cope. That's what self harm is, trying to cope.
I urge anyone going through this to try and find other coping mechanisms, ones that don't cause harm.. Hurting yourself makes you feel better for a moment, but the right help can make the rest of your life feel better. See a doctor, see a councillor, therapist, talk to someone, The Samaritan are always on the end of the phone. There is hope, I know, which is why I give Hope. I wish I could do more, but every person must face their own demons, I'm just letting them know they don't have to do it alone.
What I am doing is donating 10% of the profit of each print of this sold to the Samaritans, a worldwide charity who provide emotional support to people in distress. #
What can you do? Draw Hope. Share your story; and read others stories, and talk. Lets not keep this in the shadows. Please feel free to share this
Peace, love and fading scars,
~Blue x

Everytime I go through something, you make something that is perfect for what I'm going through.
Though I've long since stopped cutting, I still know plenty of people that do.
Hope is the perfect gift you've given people through this image.

Absolutely beautiful. I have heard of the butterfly project as I was suffering from my chronic depression and I drew butterflies on my wrist and named it after my deceased grandfather. It actually did help to some extent. I was like addicted to hurting myself in multiple ways due to being bullied from an early age (4) right through to now (18), my not so good childhood and my past and those people who i thought were friends but in the end start a lot of crap and rumours with the school and me that I ended up not going to my classes and hiding in the girls bathroom for hours until it was time to go home. I had a hard time trying to find out who my 'real' friends were and when I thought a friend was my 'true' friend they backstabbed me.
But It has been almost 2 years since I stopped self harming, I still have my rare moments where I want to go back but I vent it out into my art and poetry.
I really love this piece. I hope you keep up your good drawing as many people can relate and get inspired

Braking the table idea my friend came up to stop my mind taking the really dangerous turn destroyed three of my working tables and one chair. This butterfly project isn't only going to save my newest table from it's fate being full of holes - but also giving me a bit better way to cope with my mind.
And that picture is just beautifull, so warm despite the little sad athmosfare it's giving. It's like a shunshine after ragin strom.

Wow. This drawing is chock full of heavy emotions for me. And that was before I read the description...
The topic of 'self-harm'....well...all I can say is, I certainly can empathize with people desperately trying to cope with their problems.
I think you're doing a good thing here with the Butterfly Project. Not sure I'll be able to do the same for now. Drawing is indeed my current way of coping with my demons. Let there be Hope. Let it grew wings and take flight.
Thank you.

Wow. I was always a fan of your artwork... And this is pretty awesome. I already liked the picture and now I've read the story behind it, I LOVE IT
I have to admit... I am one of them... Not the worst cuttings but it's already too much, people say to me. But I'm already in therapy for a year now, so I hope it will get better soon... But shit keeps happening so I keep falling back in old habits...

ART CRITIQUE
by Jay-The-Punk
Date: 14/02/2013 <3 (Valentines Day) <3
Piece name: Not Alone
Artist: DestinyBlue
Negative:
The only bits i can pull up on this one are the lip it just seems there's too much lip in the gap between them i think at this angle you could see a bit but not so much? i could be wrong but it just doesn't seem to fit to me. The hair on the left side of her head seems detached from her head it could be the thick line used to show the hair on the right side of her head if there wasn't a line or a thinner on i think it would work. Just the Thumb joint needs a lil darker shading or definition. Also i don't think you should have the Deviantart, facebook and twitter directly on your art work i think it just draws you away from it also the 'By artist' isn't needed either just you putting destiny blue with it worked into the artwork somewhere which didn't disturb the flow of it was perfect!
Positive:
The rest of it is great the way the hair is colour and feels it looks so real, all the skin shading the anatonmy of her body seems spot on her face so real it like you've taken a photograph and just coloured her skin. The eyes hold so much detail and really portray her feelings. The scars look so real too. The back ground doesn't need anything in it just the colour you've chosen it's so bright but applies so much to the story for this piece. Great idea for the wings having scars on them bravo just bravo! The fingers have detail and it's well defined.
Summary:
Another outstanding piece pushing the boundaries of what you can do, original, elegant with a hard hitting message with that glimmer of hope.
I think you've taken a step onto the next plain of your style things look so real and seem to be set with a real boundary for the real with that lil bit of anime mixed in. Every so often you do a piece that really shows how you've grown it's really good to see!
Personal Note:
I think i'm guna have to buy this one aswell! Personally this holds a lot of meaning for me as probably a lot of people say. My best friends are often the ones that live far away which is unfortunate but when we meet up i feel i've met another me. I've always found i never really fit anywhere even amoungst fellow anime fans, music fans, art fans, family and friends i always have the different point of view which seems to make them not be so keen on me but i will always be me no matter what i do.
I have to say when i read about what you said about your self Miss Blue it made me feel pretty sad for such a happy person to think or see someone like yourself Miss Blue upset or crying just breaks my mask that i wear i don't often cry and always put on the brave face but that's one of the ways i'm soft. I know times were tough for you and i really wanted to find out what was going on so i could at least talk it out or do something to help but knowing i couldn't as it might not be recieved well. I know whatever hits you you will get through and become stronger.
I've never heard of the butterfly project but it sounds very good i can see it would help loads of people. Kudos to you for bringing it up and informing and donating. anyway enough of my ramblings Stay safe everyone!
If you would like critique on your artwork please send me a note on deviantart.
