Description
The butterfly flies into thunderstorms just to feel something. The girl cut herself so that she might stop the feelings. A chance meting of two similar souls, both bearing scars.
They survey each other; and realise, they are not alone.
Mm, a very personal drawing for me... I want to give a butterfly. Have you heard of the Butterfly Project? It's an initiative intended to help stop self harm.
Butterfly Project rules:
1. When you feel like you want to cut, take a marker or pen and draw a butterfly wherever the self-harm occurs.
2. Name the butterfly after a loved one, or someone that really wants you to get better.
3. NO scrubbing the butterfly off.
4. If you cut before the butterfly is gone, it dies. If you don't cut, it lives.
5. Another person may draw them on you. These butterflies are extra special. Take good care of them.
6. Even if you don’t cut, feel free to draw a butterfly anyway, to show your support.
I didn't hear about this project till after I was out of my personal crisis, but I really like the idea, supporting yourself or/and friends though tough times. But I don't think its perfect. See number 4? Your butterfly dies if you cut. When I was at my worst point I know I couldn't look after myself let alone a butterfly, real or not.
So I drew this, to give a butterfly, her name is Hope, she wont die when you cut her, because she's been through it already. She is just there for you, on your skin, a reminder that you are not alone. I wish could draw Hope on every person who needs her; if this is you, please pick up a pen and draw her onto you from me. She is a big raggedy, far from perfect, but beautiful in her uniqueness, and kind in her heart, she doesn't judge you, she is just there with you, to remind you that however bad you feel there are others like you, and people who love you.
To feel so bad that you hurt yourself to feel better. It's terribly twisted logic and a horrible thing to experience... and actually some of the most common form of self harm is actually alcohol and drug abuse.
People do all sorts of things to cope. That's what self harm is, trying to cope.
I urge anyone going through this to try and find other coping mechanisms, ones that don't cause harm.. Hurting yourself makes you feel better for a moment, but the right help can make the rest of your life feel better. See a doctor, see a councillor, therapist, talk to someone, The Samaritan are always on the end of the phone. There is hope, I know, which is why I give Hope. I wish I could do more, but every person must face their own demons, I'm just letting them know they don't have to do it alone.
What I am doing is donating 10% of the profit of each print of this sold to the Samaritans, a worldwide charity who provide emotional support to people in distress. #
What can you do? Draw Hope. Share your story; and read others stories, and talk. Lets not keep this in the shadows. Please feel free to share this
Peace, love and fading scars,
~Blue x

I just feel like the buterfly is really strong because she crossed difficulties trough pain to find what's important or moves her
but hurting yourself will only make you soffer more
once I tried to shut down my heart and not care about anything
but ended up becoming someone I didn't recognize anymore just oppened a hole in my soul
that was when I figured out avoiding pain wasn't the way to go

I normally don't write comments here, but I want to make an exeption.
I'm following you for quite a while now, I found you way before I had a DeviantArt account, so I can definitely tell you are a very emotional and sensitive person. Your art and the descriptions always touch my soul and make me cry.
That's why I named my butterfly after you. Yep, I called it Destiny and colored it with blue. It's still there and when I become old enough, I will get it as a tattoo, just because the butterfly project is wonderful and it's something I want to support all my life long, even if I don't cut.
Thanks for telling us about the butterfly project, I'm sure I wasn't the only one who didn't know about it before. ^^

Is it okay if I draw a picture of Hope or write a story featuring her to help raise awareness of this idea? I really think everyone should know about Hope.

I never felt the urge to cut myself, but I understand completely. When pain numbs you, you need to feel... anything, even the pain of the cut is better than numbness.
Reading your comment honestly put tears in my eyes. And the girl's expression, her eyes, the mouth... all is so enormously strong feelings... I really can't express myself here, I only want to say that you have touched my soul... Thank You!

Why do you always use colors? Are you repainting the brokens' world again in color? Lately, I've seen this world in nothing, but black and white. I'm trying, but it's hard. I just can't. You know sometimes I lay in night and ask, "How did I become like this?" And seeing this, you know? Makes you feel less alone. Now, I'll rewrite myself a new start. Maybe one day I'll the sun again. Thanks for motivating others to keep going.

So beautiful! I love your thinking on this. The project is a great idea but how many butterflies would have died because of me? I have long overcome that point in my life thanks to my husband and now my daughter but I wish I had seen this picture back then. You are an amazing person Destiny and your art always seems to touch my heart.

Awww beautiful description. Brought a tear to my eye.
Just had a thought, why not do a lineart of Hope that people colour and personalise. Then in a way you'd be drawing a little Hope for everyone in need.

The lips really remind me of how Alphonse Mucha drew lips in his posters - I think It's the thick line around the edges. This is gorgeous!

your words are really touching, for those who are in pain. The butterfly Hope would make me sad, but happy. I wish i had someone that was like the butterfly. Really there is only one person that can make me feel better though..
I think that, looking at your art is a way for me to cope..

I always love looking at your art and reading the descriptions because of their incredibly deep and moving nature.... I have never self harmed (as long as you don't include very bad nail biting....) but I know a fair few people who have. I always wonder if there's more I can do to help them, or if I should even get involved in their problems because they have other confidants.. But I feel now that I can support them through the Butterfly. I want to call mine Serenity
Thank you for all your amazing art and support of the Samaritans and I hope you're feeling well. xxx

I almost cried when I read all the description..Wish I showed this to a friend of mine before he gone away.
I don't cut myself, but I guess everyone does some self-harm from time to time, in their own ways.
Most of the time it's not physical harm, but mental/emotional....
Will try to remember the butterfly.
Looking at your gallery even helped me a bit with my own art block.
So the least I can say is thank you.
Not for the butterfly project, but for your meaningful art.
I love to read the meaning of art when the artist writes and explains it. (also when it's kind of self explanatory)
Keep up this beautiful and meaningful art of yours.
