Glimmering spectral beasts of the night. Shiny, almost chromatic denizens of the sky. The glowing swarms of Phantom Hell. Aurora Bats are all of these things.

It would seem that Aurora Bats are related to Phantom Worms darksack100.deviantart.com/art… , if only because the two thrive in Phantom Hell and are eternally existing conceptual inhabitants of the zone. Named for their mesmerizing appearance, Aurora Bats prefer to roam wide open spaces, but occasionally fly through tunnels and closer to ground level, presumably for the sole purpose of interacting with other native and non-"native" life. Though they physically resemble bats, they fly much more like insects, buzzing and whirring through the empty space like a cloud. Since they have been seen in many non-oxygenated and vacuum-like areas of Phantom Hell, it is thought that the creatures can survive in an absence of matter, but this has not been confirmed.

They typically take the appearance of a spinning cloud, which from the top or bottom resembles a glittering vortex. Through soundless communication they manage to act as one singular entity, even forming "tendrils" of bats to seek out or investigate areas. Once the group locates a living creature, they come to a unanimous decision whether to leave... or disassemble it.

Aurora Bats are composed of a very strange element. Very little is known about the properties and even atomic appearance of this element, but all tests point to it operating on a level either unexplainable by current science, or unexplainable by reality. This element continuously emits an energy field that slowly but surely breaks apart the bonds between molecules and converts most biomatter into carbon and hydrogen gas. What's more, the effect is amplified by the number of bats radiating the energy field.

In layman's terms, a swarm of bats will chemically rip you apart and turn you into gas.

For many Phantom Hell veterans, the sight is familiar yet ghastly. The Bats will swirl around their victim as it dissolves into fleshy mist, only to be absorbed by the Aurora Bats and presumably converted into more of their element. When an Aurora Bat assimilates enough foreign atoms into its structure, it undergoes mitosis and creates a new member. Since all they need for their reproduction is the assimilation of carbon and hydrogen, it is thought that merely existing in a vapor can promote reproduction, yet somehow the bats have never taken over Phantom Hell, possibly due to predation by another creature, or by Phantom Hell itself.

Aurora Bats and Phantom Worms tend not to interact. They have very different niches. Even when they do come into contact they tend to ignore eachother. Phantom Worms cannot assimilate Aurora Bats, and Aurora Bats find Phantom Worm shells to be either disgusting or toxic.
