Description Bagoas was a eunuch who became the vizier to Artaxerxes III, and his favorite. He is a warrior and commander of king's army, he allied himself with the Rhodian mercenary general Mentor, and with him conquered Egypt.
After the death of Artaxerxes, Bagoas became the de facto ruler of Persia, he deposes kings and raises, eliminates unnecessary people. So he destroyed all the Achaemenid dynasty of kings. He enthroned Codomannus, under the name of Darius III.
When Darius attempted to become independent of the powerful vizier, Bagoas tried to poison him too; but Darius was warned and forced Bagoas to drink the poison himself.

I have not found any image of Bagoas the vizier, and so I decided to draw it myself. He is mysterious and unusual person in history.
Some interesting facts about him:
- He was extremely rich, he had a magnificent palace in Babylon, surrounded by a beautiful garden. Only his clothes worth 1,000 talents (thirty thousand kilograms of silver). For comparison, the most expensive tombs in Macedonia were worth 200 talents.
- Alexander accused Bagoas in financing the murder of his father Philip.
- Despite the fact that he was a eunuch, he was a great warrior and military leader.
- Artaxerxes loved him and trusted him. Bagoas was his lover. The fact that he had killed the king, this version has not been proved since, the Persian chronicles say that the king Artaxerxes died a natural death.

Interesting that two Persian kings (who are cousins) have eunuch lovers who just so happen to share the same name. But did he (the vizier) die from drinking the poisoned cup? I read about it, but I couldn't understand. If he was forced to drink poison then was it not strong enough to kill him?

Oh, I like the details on Artaxerxes, especially his hair. Is it naturally a light color or it just a result of the lighting? But what a tragic end of the mighty Achaemenid dynasty.

By the time the vizier Bagoas drank the poison he had already lost his power. Personally, I think that the Vizier was tired of life and war.
The king really has blonde hair.

In ancient art gender differences were not very distinct.
