Description
Basil Lekapenos was a powerful eunuch and ruler of Byzantine empire. He was an illegitimate son of the Byzantine emperor Romanos I Lekapenos who served as the parakoimomenos and chief minister of the Byzantine Empire for most of the period 947–985, under emperors Constantine VII, Nikephoros II Phokas, John I Tzimiskes, and Basil II.His mother was a slave woman of "Scythian" (possibly implying Slavic/Bulgarians) origin.
Basil was a close friend of emperor John Tzimiskes. Basil himself took part in the great campaign against the Rus' in Bulgaria in 971, having been entrusted with the reserve forces, the baggage train and the supply arrangements, while Tzimiskes himself with his elite troops marched ahead.
His enormous wealth enabled Basil to become, according to the Oxford Dictionary of Byzantium, "one of the most lavish Byzantine art patrons".
"Psellos characterized him as the most remarkable person in the Roman empire," outstanding in intellect, bodily stature, and regal in appearance." As an artifice shaped by human hands, Basil Lekapenos became skilled in rhetoric, diplomacy, warfare; he possessed avid desire for wealth and power, subtle taste, and an eye for exquisite shapes. This eunuch's adorned body could
be equated to the beautiful Limburg container. It is this brilliant form in which power resides. The eunuch is the angelic guard and protector; the face and body of the empire, in brief—the container of the empire. Relic and reliquary work in tandem, a pair suspended between presence and absence, between inaccessible energy—the emperor—and sensual experience of an iconized container—the eunuch."
— Res: Anthropology and Aesthetics, 51: Spring 2007. By Francesco Pellizzi
"The angels' appearance, stature, gait, and role in the celestial palace mirror the functions of eunuchs in the terrestrial court. As in the celestial court, access to the emperor passes through the rings of eunuchs surrounding his throne. This angelic guard is characterized with long and slender bodies, snowy white skin, and radiant garments of purple and gold. The image of these angels reveals the Byzantine perception of the ideal court eunuch: young, possessing extraordinary beauty, with radiant skin and hair, dressed in purple-golden silks and linens (Res: Anthropology and Aesthetics, 51: Spring 2007)"
"Another possible explanation can also be derived from physiognomy, though coining to adverse conclusion. The handsome eunuch, whose physical beauty reflects the beauty of his soul, is a common subject in writings from the early Byzantine period. The vision of the luminous beauty of eunuchs, associated with purity and the soul's beauty, finds an important development in relation to angels, resulting in eunuchophilia. Eunuchs and angels are both royal messengers and they both introduce dignitaries to the sovereign. A dream-interpreting work, dated from the ninth to the eleventh centuries, indicates that if one dreams of a gracious and tall eunuch, the eunuch should be considered an angel, because a eunuch resembles an angel an being pure and does not feel carnal desire (Drexl 1925:10)."

Byzantines were apparently slow to embrace the Papal Western conviction that mutilating an innocent child for any reason was an abomination against a work of God’s hand.

Was Origen considered a saint in the east? I don’t see why not, unless it’s only ok as long as someone ELSE did it to them.

Origen, the greek theologian who castrated himself to teach women without being tempted to have sex with them? Unfortunately I don't know much about him... but perhaps some people considered him a saint... some eunuchs were seen as angels...

Well, as far as the Western Patriarchy was concerned, deliberately mutilating oneself was disqualifying for Sainthood. Saint Paul’s condemnation of the Cult of Hermaphrodite when preaching to the Corinthians was interpreted by the Latins as not simply another condemnation of paganism in general but a condemnation of self mutilation and sterilization in particular. It was implicitly anti natal as well, which has ALWAYS been an abominable mindset to Orthodox thinking. As Saint Augustine indicates, fornication that is open to life is not as immoral as fornication that deliberately made it impossible. Many eunuchs were used as sex toys for avoiding pregnancy. That puts no immortality on INVOLUNTARY eunuchs, however, which seem to be the exclusive focus of this art series. Someone gelded after puberty will retain masculine features, which clearly are not of interest here, although it seems naive to me to assume that the average gelding as a baby would grow into such a svelte beauty. The photographs of the last generation of Ottoman Eunuchs I’ve seen were all plump and dumpy looking, although perhaps, having been freed from slavery, they decided to live up what luxury they could and were no longer keeping the weight off with daily chores. So was it the lack of hormones or the lack of exercise? I’m not sure.

As far as I know, castration had already been forbidden in Ancient Rome, with the pretext of turning men effeminate and prone to sodomy, which was seen as unnaceptable in Roman Society. The cult of the Galli, the priests of Goddess Cybelle, was seen as a threat for the roman citizens.
Well, it's true, Western church didn't accept castration... but all the flagellation rituals that took place in middle age were also a kind of mutilation itself... these were, of course, forbidden by the church as well, because it deviated people from the Church, since they believed that flagellation rituals were enough to cleanse their souls from sin.
There were Russian sects from centuries XVIII and XIX that preached castration and flagellation as ways to get closer to God.

There were several schools of thought on flagellation. The goal was principally to use pain as a sacrificial method of self discipline, not to show off scars, which some so called penitents did to boast about how tough they were. “Do not pray in the streets like the hypocrites, but in private”. So a balance was sought; silk whips could sting as much as any, yet did not break the skin. Another was really tiny needles that could draw blood but healed without scars. And of course, the most popular, the Hairshirt, which was more sacrifice through enduring vexing annoyance then pain.

"... a regal-looking eunuch [...] His complexion [...] pale and flawless, the contour of his face cut delicately, like the outer curve of a rose petal. His features were serene, with a slight Slavic look on them.

As a gentle breeze, like a kiss from heaven, blows away his immaculate, gossamer, featherlight dress, it magically transfigurates in billowing clouds, clouds that appeared to enfold the blistering sun of his angelic, delicate form. Mimicking the motion of the fabric, his luminous, flower-crowned wheat hair freely flows behind his body, giving him the elegance and spark of a golden cape. His jeweled earrings also dance, as appearing to be eager to rush into this game, contributing to this equilibrium in a small scale. In fact, his very figure seems to dance in the wind along with the reedy grassblades; flexible, graceful, carefree. The sun strikes his bare shoulders and arms, gracing them with an aura of pure warm light, like alabaster inlaid in virgin gold. From his stiletto fingers, a stream of crimson petals flows in the wind, as free as his own soul in this bright glorious afternoon. They flow red, like those droplets of blood that once gushed from the wounds of the castration inflicted to him in the dawnbreak of his life. However, the same way the petals are carried away by the wind to never be seen again, the bleeding pain of the past had long been erased. He now stands powerful, beautiful, ideal; his face painted with the hues of serenity as his eyes hold a magnetic stare; like shards of moon. And he runs free, as the wind dancing trees seem to whisper in enrapturing trance, O, beautiful pure eunuch...
He never stops inspiring me in this picture..... Deva you genius who whispers in my ear and gleams in my eyes... And Basil you angel...

you mean HE, is a boy. many eunuchs just had the testicles removed, but in byzantine empire often the pennis was also cut. If you assumed that is a girl, then no, this isn't clitoris-cut practice research about eunuchs to clear that out, I also am learning new curiosities about them
they're much more than chopped balls, they're beautiful androgynous boys and many of them held powerful positions... they were not harem sluts and most of them didn't choose to be mutilated (except the ones who made it to remain chaste).
