Is it your habit to reduce the picture to the size of a postage stamp to view the design (i.e. the postage stamp test)?  One can also flip it upside down at the same time.  Viewing it this way enables a clear assessment of the tonal scheme and large shapes.

I try to step back on my work, but it is not always easy ...
You do not like the result?
I'd like to know your opinion.

No problem with the result.  I ask because I see what I think could be missed opportunities with the design.  The postage stamp test lets you concentrate on the design by eliminating detail.  It gives you the chance to see the result as an abstraction, a harmony, or conflict of shapes, rather than an assembly of realistic forms. So, it takes you away from form, temporarily.

My question was aimed at finding out how carefully you attend to design - by what specific method you attend to it.  Everyone says he attends to design; few actually do it consciously.

The point is that the design is a story in itself.  If it's theme works with the overt subject matter, it supports and reinforces it.  If not, it detracts.

I answer late, because I was moving.
I understand the purpose of your question better. It is difficult to describe my design method correctly, because it is evolving very quickly and is not yet very solid. It's still tinkering for now.
Thank you very much for your interest in my work, it gives me great pleasure.

I trust all went well with the move.  It is a major disruption.  And it takes time afterwards to settle into familiar routines.
Same for me.  I am progressing into graphic storytelling - sequential art - which, up until now, has been difficult to integrate with picture composition and written composition.  A lot of it is still more in my gut than in my head.
