Looks like a different look for the ships from the anime series "Legend of Galactic Heroes".

Battle station receiving regular traffic. Or how about battlecruiser going out hunting the enemy or old battlecruiser going privateering. As for the small ship well i see it as a troop carrier.

Very nice.. I could do without the dark foreground object throwing my understanding of the shape of the waystation off, but.. hee! like a space weigh station.. awesome.
HMmm a story? Something like.. maybe it's populated by the extremely law-abiding, and everyone has to hide their illegal activities when they go there for service.. but they can't avoid going there because it's so convenient..

Well thats the idea really, its supposed to be so huge it throws off your idea of shape, taking it from an actual object in space to the space itself.
As to the story, I like it! meshes well with Arena fighters suggestion.. would also make for a 'frontier town' stalls and shops set up by the ships crews before you go through security checks and Customs.
A good excuse to show some ramshackled and thrown together bustling markets and the like within a high tech environment.
