You would not believe how much of a pain this one drawing has been to finish !
In Japan, Part III is the most iconic and popular (well, unless it's Part V... eh, we'll see about that...) but in the West Part IV is the one hyped as hell. It's the one Araki enjoyed writing the most and that got hyped by MyAnimeList and the forums and the like... hell, some people outright spit on the first 3 parts and say it only got good with Part IV. THAT is a lot of a horseshit.
First off, better than the Hamon duology ? Nope, don't think so buddy. It'd need to have their qualities and MORE to actually dare to make that claim. Economy of character and consistent atmospheres ? Here's a quality Araki used to have before stands. Hell, I would not have minded if the anime altered stuff to trim the fat because some of the "Morioh warriors" are complete disposable crap WHILE the Hamon section cast is the one I really wish to see more of (also fuck you TV Tropes, PB's manga artwork is waaay above the anime's mediocre design. And Hayama's above either...).
Better than Part III ? Well, that's wrong too because SDC got a neat upgrade with the OVA while in terms of manga, they are tied. SDC has a better cast in the Crusaders and a direction (killing Bowser...err...DIO.) while DIU has a better ratio of antagonists (the irredeemable villains of Part IV are exquisite !) and potential... that it does not fucking fulfill.

First off, why the fuck is Josuke SIDELINED in his own fucking part ? HONESTLY ?! Even the live-action film had a waaaay better idea of giving his grandad a more important role and impact (like investigating Reimi's murder...) just to set him having a more central role in the Kira section (which is unlikely to be filmed...a shame really...). And the most damning part is that MOST of Josuke's fights are pretty cool ! So it would not have been rocket science to give him more of an emotional drive and keep the plot more focused on investigation/thrillers. The very last JoJo we'll cover does offer a great example of how it could have been done...
Second, Joseph. Just Joseph. A lot of fans HATE the whole affair angle (and I perfectly understand that) while some flaunt that it's what makes Joseph a way better character than his grandad (and they can go fuck themselves). MY issue ? Araki chickened the fuck out and did not even want to adress it. Like, dude, you dropped THIS bombshell. Wouldn't you want to share with the class HOW it happened ? Holly and Suzi's reactions SHOWN and DRAWN ? Cus there's some juicy drama there to explore ! Nope. Just the Invisible baby (whose mom should've been the victim of a a certain paraphiliac and a better plot point) and we're done. As a good friend of mine said, Joseph is as invisible as the baby in this part... hell even Tomoko gets pretty much forgotten when there is a later arc that could've used her 64.media.tumblr.com/24ab91dd06… . Speaking of which, Josuke says his mother never got over Joseph so it must have been one hell of a ride !
* Jotaro... nah, no problem with him in this part. He does take more after his great-grandma (in role and personality) and does feel more mature even if still somewhat blunt. Hell, he does not feel de-emphasized as the main lead like in Part III since he swimmingly fits as a mentor here. I just wish the anime HINTED at his marriage and him being a dad just to keep viewers on their toes and have it be an actual adaptation that fixes the week-by-week lack of coherence. I mean they took that liberty with my favorite Part IV character and it paid off BUT they did not plan ahead either so it's a tall fucking order...
* Koichi... OK, I'll straight up say it; he's half and half. One half is the appreciation I had for him back when I first read DIU... the other is what happens when I REREAD JoJo 8 years later. People say that he has the best development in the OGverse. I say NO because 1) having your pokemon evolve really does not qualify as development and 2) Yukako.
See, I liked the first Yukako arc... but I never bought her redemption. There's no fucking way I'll accept that cunt as one of the allies when her entire damn character is being a damn creep. Kinda makes me sour on Koichi too because it makes him a fucking walkover.And if you're gonna tell me I'm wrong and that their romance is totes cool... OK, REVERSE their sexes. Picture that she is a dude, and Koichi was the girl and put them in the exact same scenario . Anything to add there ?
* Okuyasu, Yuya, Mikitaka, Tonio, Reimi and her little dog too... love 'em and no problems with them. I just want to point at my appreciation for these fellas...

* Rohan. While I don't love him (that's for a future version of him...) nor hate him (that's for the goddamn one-shots Araki keeps churning. Of all characters he picks in this fantastic world, his husbando the self-centered mangaka is the one to focus on ? Dammit. Initially, I coould not give a fuck about them since I am hardly interested in subjects like "what finger Rohan uses to scratch his ass" but the time where motherfucking Akira Otoishi pops up to hang out with the "Morioh crew" is where enough is fucking enough. And OF COURSE, Rohan gets a damn Live-action show...), I do declare that Reimi saved his ass both in-universe and role-wise. She gave him SOME amount of nuance so that he becomes more than a self-fellating asshole.
* Hayato is errr... meh. Revisting DIU, I notice that he literally becomes a different character just so his "dad" can be taken down. Initially, this little bastard put cameras in HIS PARENTS' BEDROOM ! Who does that ?! Who wants to see his folks DOING IT ?! Maybe HE was gonna be the next serial killer because you gotta be fucked in the head to do something like that ! Then, BAM, Hayato gains the traits of Poco and becomes a whole new character. So much for "improved" writing...
* Shinobu... I have much less issues with. I kinda like her even she overreacts in front of the cat (don't people just shoo cats away in Morioh ?). Plus, you know what the lady needed i.kym-cdn.com/photos/images/fa… ... yeah I feel inspired there.
* Yoshikage Kira... what can I say? Still my favorite JoFoe and depraved serial killer. Now I do hear that Araki wanted to expand on his background but voted against it fearing that he'd make Kira too sympathetic and Josuke cruel for confronting him. To this I say, Hirohiko, buddy... it would not change a thing. Coddling/Norman Bates raising or NOT, whether mommy was mean to him or not, whether Yoshihiro was neglectful when alive or not, Yoshikage Kira is always at the end of the day an irredeemable murdering bastard who uses the hands of the women he murdered as fleshlights. He may be more collected and controlled in attitude, but his sadism is definitely there and the dude IS not shy of it. EVEN in real life, some people CHOOSE to be utter garbage, backgrounds nonwithstanding. That's how things are. And as he IS depicted, I think of him as a somewhat spoiled kid judging how easily he gets pissed when things don't go his way.
Also, no, unless you make a darkly comedic parody of it, Yoshikage would never rehabilitate himself for Shinobu's sake. He'd eventually murder her. Simple as that.
Then there's the "Dead Man Questions" which is... passable at best. The 2 problems I had when I reread are thus; 1) why use Kira when his story is perfectly concluded in DIU ? 2) Due to the damn sameface syndrome setting in, he does not have the slightest resemblance to David Bowie anymore and not even hints that he is the same guy. Hell, that story could've been about about a random hobo ghost and it would not change a thing. The drip is nice though...
* The introduction of the stand arrow ! And I gotta say, it is a decent plot device... granted the NEXT Part is gonna fuck up hard with the origin (what the flying fuck were Araki's editors even doing ? So they bark at the guy when he wants to write women or foreign protagonists but when he ACTUALLY has a crummy idea, they don't care ? NO one called him out on THIS images.squarespace-cdn.com/con… being a stupid idea for the arrow's origin ?)
* You will notice Hol Horse's presence here and ask yourself "what the ever-loving hell is the Complete Colt doing here ?". Well the current spin-off justifies the Entire Equine's inclusion and it is the most enjoyable JoJo story I've had since a certain novel. Now, Kohei Kadono is pretty good at handling JJBA characters and like Maijo Otaro and Nisio Isin, digs the lore of the series ! He did fine with the Part V Epilogue novel (we WILL get to that next time !) and he is teamed up now with an excellent artist (Takasu Karasuma is killing it !) for a tale featuring Bonded Bronco and JoJo04.
Still ongoing, I look forward to its continuation; seeing Ryohei and Josuke again is a pleasure, Ryoko Kakyoin is absolutely adorable (about time someone gave Noriaki some fucking attention by the by !) and the Ultimate Ungulate steals the damn show !
Oh and as the usual motive goes, DIO is scarier in this spin-off (where he's in flashbacks) than how he actually is in the SDC manga, which is sadly hilarious or hilariously sad... depends on how you see it.

You may have noticed, astute that you are, that some characters are missing in this poster while others that do not appear in this part are well present. There's a good reason for it i.e. I just dislike the absentees that much and love the added ones a lot.

Turns out it is the most chill theme for all the parts...

01) Far From Any Road - The Handsome Family
Look, the Main Mount and the cute redhead cousin deserved something so I included this...plus it has more Ryohei !

02) Psycho Killer - Talking Heads
The fanbase LIED TO ME ! It's not the Morioh's sense of community (which is fucking crummy if you come down to it) or the slice of life stuff that is great in this part, it's the depraved, callous, ruthless, inconsiderate and even disgusting murderers that roam this little to perform a little population regulation. Why do you think they're prominent on my poster ?!

03) Skinned - Blind Melon
Upon reading the Angelo arc, you may think he's waaaay too cartoony and overexagerated. Well for a serial killer, he really is not. People like Angelo fucking exist. Chew on that.

04) Killers - Kevin MacLeod
So Josuke and Koichi meet the Nijimura Brothers. While Okuyasu is more of a misguided brute whose redemption I do buy (it's despair and brotherly attachment that drives him even if he deep down does not approve of his sibling's actions...), Keicho is a genuinely inconsiderate prick and as such, I include him among the psychos. Look, I do feel sad for him having to pay for Mansaku's mistake of joining Dio's sect for cash YET I do not forget that among the people he shot with the stand arrow we have Angelo and Akira Otoishi. So, the dude dug his own grave.

05) Never Gonna Stop - Rob Zombie
And another main psycho appears ! Hurray ! I gotta say, people may think "Red Hot Chili Pepper" is one note but He fucking slays said note ! Plus, it leads to cool moments from both Okuyasu and Josuke once they confront the stand and Akira himself.

06) Still Loving You - Scorpion
I included this because my boy Joseph got done dirty and deserved a way more important role in this here arc. The affair rarely gets brought up (much like Tomoko herself and Josuke being a Joestar). We get little mention of Suzi Q aside from her being mad at Joseph (AS SHE FUCKING SHOULD) or even Holly's reaction ! This is unfortunately a flaw that started mid-Part III and got way worse here; no more focus on the Joestars. Very unfortunate because I personally don't find Morioh and its people all that interesting, but Araki seems enamored with them despite having 3 JoJos running around...

07) Food, Glorious Food - Tony Osborne & His Orchestra
So Josuke and Okuyasu go to the restaurant of one Antonio Volpe.. I mean,Tonio Trussardi. Tonio's a damn cool guy even if his only faux-pas is to have made Puttanesca Spaghetti instead of the clearly superior Nero Del Sepia one ! But he's still young, he's bound to make mistakes.

08) Plague Bloom - Plague Inc OST
Now I never got why people mock Jotaro during the whole rat problem. I mean, I never saw him as invincible in either versions of SDC and there will always be moments where he needs help. And here, both him and Josuke needed to team-up to take on the Bug-Eaten Rat. And before you laugh, real life rats are actually formidable and adaptable creatures. You can even make one dig through a person's belly by putting a bucket on it. Once it understands that the bucket can't move, it will try escaping from below... Now, imagine one of these critters having genuine malice AND a flesh-melting bio-weapon mini-missile ghost launcher.
The only change I'd have made would be lmaking it ONE rat only, the first one killed by Josuke would just be bait/Bug Eaten's piece of ass...

09) Carol Anne's Theme - Jerry Goldsmith
So Rohan and Koichi meet the greatest JoJo Gal of Part IV; Reimi Sugimoto. Now that I think about it, how did she and Arnold end up as poltergeists ? And couldn't any of my beloved characters from past parts do the same ? Or was the grim reaper sloppy that day ? Ah, the mysteries of Death !

10) Venus - Bananarama
Because Aya deserves better. Also I think she deserves her own gigolo for some reason...

11) Hold Your Hand In Mine - Tom Lehrer
So Yoshikage appears to go eat a sandwich with his girlfriend of the moment (ladies man that he is) and eliminate the bastard child of Dodoria. Which I am thankful for...

12) The Great Escape - Venom: Let There Be Carnage OST
Ah yes, from the investigation at the tailor shop to the insanity of Killer Queen's left hand heat seeking mini-tank until Yoshikage's daring escape ! It's a delight (maybe Koichi should've died there, that'd give this part much needed emergency...).

13) Monsieur - Thomas Fersen
So the dudes I love (and Koichi) go investigate at Kira's home... and they meet his dear old non-departed daddy.

14) Everything You Know Is Wrong - Weird Al Yankovic
So Josuke and Okuyasu meet Mikitaka. Hilarity ensues and yes, the alien deserved better... or he could be just another type of fae. I mean the pillar-men exist so it would not be the first non-human sapient creature in JJBA...

15) Highway Star - Deep Purple
The fight against the other dude who's got a believable redemption, Yuya Fungami. Sure he used his stand to heal himself at the expense of another, but it's Rohan that he was draining so I cannot really blame him. And yes, Josuke using Crazy Diamond to heal him then throw him out the window is amazing...

16) Pet Semetary - Ramones
Shinobu accidentally kills a puss then gets hers wet and bothered upon realizing that her "husband" saved her after she fainted. Said "husband" buys cat food later...

17) Where Evil Grows - The Poppy Family
The Enigma Dude is one of my favorite pure evil antagonists in DIU. Dude's got the attitude of a Batman villain and that's something to be admired...

18) Another One Bites The Dust - Queen
Yoshikage acquires an upgrade thanks to the arrow (which is awesome), Hayato gets part of Poco's personality (...siiiigh, whatever, let's roll with it) and Groundhog Day becomes a horror movie ! So it's damn cool son !

19) Bakusou Yumeuta - Diggy-Mo
Josuke VS Yoshikage is easily one of my favorite battles and something I was hyped for before even reading part IV.

Kinda regret that Josuke is not the one to throw Kira under the Ambulance... YEAH, I prefer the darker endings even when victorious !

20) Mid-Summer Sky - Kevin MacLeod
So Reimi and Arnold go to the Afterlife... which is a touching scene if I ignore the detail that bot it down which is the presence of shitheels like Yukako, Tamami and Hazamada. These cunts are filler and did contribute to Jack Shit overall. Seriously, I would not have mourned them getting the chopping block if Part IV had an OVA adaptation.

21) End Of Part IV - JJBA ASB OST

So I may more issues with it than most due to writer/reader differences in terms of interest, but hey, the highs are still high and it does inspire other fans to write some neat stories about it. Here are 2 I particularily love (and used as inspiration)

While Okuyasu is more of a misguided brute whose redemption I do buy (it's despair and brotherly attachment that drives him even if he deep down does not approve of his sibling's actions...), Keicho is a genuinely inconsiderate prick and as such, I include him among the psychos. Look, I do feel sad for him having to pay for Mansaku's mistake of joining Dio's sect for cash YET I do not forget that among the people he shot with the stand arrow we have Angelo and Akira Otoishi. So, the dude dug his own grave.

05) Never Gonna Stop - Rob Zombie
And another main psycho appears ! Hurray ! I gotta say, people may think "Red Hot Chili Pepper" is one note but He fucking slays said note ! Plus, it leads to cool moments from both Okuyasu and Josuke once they confront the stand and Akira himself.

06) Still Loving You - Scorpion
I included this because my boy Joseph got done dirty and deserved a way more important role in this here arc. The affair rarely gets brought up (much like Tomoko herself and Josuke being a Joestar). We get little mention of Suzi Q aside from her being mad at Joseph (AS SHE FUCKING SHOULD) or even Holly's reaction ! This is unfortunately a flaw that started mid-Part III and got way worse here; no more focus on the Joestars. Very unfortunate because I personally don't find Morioh and its people all that interesting, but Araki seems enamored with them despite having 3 JoJos running around...

07) Food, Glorious Food - Tony Osborne & His Orchestra
So Josuke and Okuyasu go to the restaurant of one Antonio Volpe.. I mean,Tonio Trussardi. Tonio's a damn cool guy even if his only faux-pas is to have made Puttanesca Spaghetti instead of the clearly superior Nero Del Sepia one ! But he's still young, he's bound to make mistakes.

08) Plague Bloom - Plague Inc OST
Now I never got why people mock Jotaro during the whole rat problem. I mean, I never saw him as invincible in either versions of SDC and there will always be moments where he needs help. And here, both him and Josuke needed to team-up to take on the Bug-Eaten Rat. And before you laugh, real life rats are actually formidable and adaptable creatures. You can even make one dig through a person's belly by putting a bucket on it. Once it understands that the bucket can't move, it will try escaping from below... Now, imagine one of these critters having genuine malice AND a flesh-melting bio-weapon mini-missile ghost launcher.
The only change I'd have made would be lmaking it ONE rat only, the first one killed by Josuke would just be bait/Bug Eaten's piece of ass...

09) Carol Anne's Theme - Jerry Goldsmith
So Rohan and Koichi meet the greatest JoJo Gal of Part IV; Reimi Sugimoto. Now that I think about it, how did she and Arnold end up as poltergeists ? And couldn't any of my beloved characters from past parts do the same ? Or was the grim reaper sloppy that day ? Ah, the mysteries of Death !

10) Venus - Bananarama
Because Aya deserves better. Also I think she deserves her own gigolo for some reason...

11) Hold Your Hand In Mine - Tom Lehrer
So Yoshikage appears to go eat a sandwich with his girlfriend of the moment (ladies man that he is) and eliminate the bastard child of Dodoria. Which I am thankful for...

12) The Great Escape - Venom: Let There Be Carnage OST
Ah yes, from the investigation at the tailor shop to the insanity of Killer Queen's left hand heat seeking mini-tank until Yoshikage's daring escape ! It's a delight (maybe Koichi should've died there, that'd give this part much needed emergency...).

13) Monsieur - Thomas Fersen
So the dudes I love (and Koichi) go investigate at Kira's home... and they meet his dear old non-departed daddy.

14) Everything You Know Is Wrong - Weird Al Yankovic
So Josuke and Okuyasu meet Mikitaka. Hilarity ensues and yes, the alien deserved better... or he could be just another type of fae. I mean the pillar-men exist so it would not be the first non-human sapient creature in JJBA...

15) Highway Star - Deep Purple
The fight against the other dude who's got a believable redemption, Yuya Fungami. Sure he used his stand to heal himself at the expense of another, but it's Rohan that he was draining so I cannot really blame him. And yes, Josuke using Crazy Diamond to heal him then throw him out the window is amazing...

16) Pet Semetary - Ramones
Shinobu accidentally kills a puss then gets hers wet and bothered upon realizing that her "husband" saved her after she fainted. Said "husband" buys cat food later...

17) Where Evil Grows - The Poppy Family
The Enigma Dude is one of my favorite pure evil antagonists in DIU. Dude's got the attitude of a Batman villain and that's something to be admired...

18) Another One Bites The Dust - Queen
Yoshikage acquires an upgrade thanks to the arrow (which is awesome), Hayato gets part of Poco's personality (...siiiigh, whatever, let's roll with it) and Groundhog Day becomes a horror movie ! So it's damn cool son !

19) Bakusou Yumeuta - Diggy-Mo
Josuke VS Yoshikage is easily one of my favorite battles and something I was hyped for before even reading part IV.

20) Mid-Summer Sky - Kevin MacLeod
So Reimi and Arnold go to the Afterlife... which is a touching scene if I ignore the detail that bot it down which is the presence of shitheels like Yukako, Tamami and Hazamada. These cunts are filler and did contribute to Jack Shit overall. Seriously, I would not have mourned them getting the chopping block if Part IV had an OVA adaptation.

21) End Of Part IV - JJBA ASB OST

So I may more issues with it than most due to writer/reader differences in terms of interest, but hey, the highs are still high and it does inspire other fans to write some neat stories about it. Here are 2 I particularily love (and used as inspiration)
