Description
My 3rd attempt at doing a portrait, probably my best one so far, HOWEVER i had to scan it in 2 pieces and despite my best efforts some traces of a scan line still remains..So there he is, the Joker from the Dark Knight batman film.
I thought Heath Ledger's performance in that was superb and perfectly captured the Joker's personality. RIP Heath Ledger.
Any critique/comments would be grealy appreciated

Wow e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="23" height="15" alt="
" title="Wow!"/> You have really drawed the Joker in all his glory from what i can see!
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="
" title="
(Smile)"/> Also, the title "How about a Magic Trick" really helps to transmit the message even more. It made me remember that scene of the movie too. You transmited the idea with accuracy.
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/w/w… " width="15" height="15" alt="
" title="Wink/Razz"/> I always think that drawings who says something worth a lot, and this ... definely is outstanding.
I've always see drawings of the joker, but he is not doing anything, but this drawing is different, he is doing something. And as you really mentioned on the title, it looks like he is saying: "How about a Magic Trick?" , "Are you callenging me?" or "You don't know who i am... don't you?" a lot of ideas comes to my mind! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/a/a… " width="15" height="15" alt="
" title="Aww"/>
Something that called my atention was the style you used to represent it, simple, not so detailed and gets to the main idea. e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="
" title="
(Big Grin)"/> There are a lots of ways to draw something, and this... called my attention indeed. The hairs is detailed, his eyes, face and even little details on his clothes and his card, even the hand, are well proportionated!
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="
" title="
(Big Grin)"/> A good idea would have been something to "fill" that white background. I think you need to put something "there", but hehehe it's just my opinion, you are the master here!
e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="
" title="

It blows my mind, as i've said before the aplication of an "idea" or "message" to one drawing wich you get with his facial expresion. That impacted me more most. 5 starts you deserve! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/b/b… " width="15" height="15" alt="
" title="
(Big Grin)"/>
In conclusion, an exelent drawing. A good idea to send to the apreciator, good techniques and very good details on the whole thing, but that can be improved! Congratulations Mr. DeVmarine, probably you don't know me but i liked this drawing a lot, that a simple comment... wouldn't have been what this awesome drawing really deserve. Keep up the good work my friend! e.deviantart.net/emoticons/s/s… " width="15" height="15" alt="

What an amazing piece! I love the Joker so much, and you've drawn him really well! You've caught the expression in his eyes, and the details in his face are amazing. Same for the hair.
Your sketching technique is really great... nothing much that could be changed. However, you could try adding some sort of background, to make it a little darker. You already have a lot of details, but maybe try for a really realistic kind of style? Right now your style is much more sketchy.
Overall I really love this piece, you've done excellent work on it! Good job!

thats incredible!! Looks just like him.
Also I agree that Heath was amazing in that film, the best Joker I have ever seen (along with Mark Hamill from the Arkham Asylum and Arkham City games). RIP.

It was quite a while ago, but I think I used 3b graphite pencil and mechanical pencil for the hair.

Awesome drawing pal!
A tip for the scanning process. I had the same problem as you, so I put all the parts of the scanned image in a photoshop archive, then I put one up the another, and "mix" them using eraser with with not full transparency, so all the 2 images will be saw in the mixing zone, but you will not see the difference in colors and lines...
Look this drawing I have done, it´s scanned in 4 PARTS! See [link] As you can see there are some vertical white lines, but they are not from mixing parts of the drawings, these white lines are an error from my scanner, maybe it´s dirty (every scan page have that white line all across...). So look you will not find any mixing zone, it`s look like 1 piece

Well first thanks for the advice, however this was actually done quite a while ago, and if you have a look at my gallery from that point onwards you can't really see the scan lines i just used charcoal brush set on low opacity in photoshop to "draw over" the parts which don't quite match up.

This is really well done - the shades and textures and details are all awesome
oooh yeah, i see the scan line - i HATE that when i have to do that myself - so very frustrating. somehow it never lines up, does it?
i tend to avoid it by working smal, which isn't always the best idea either *sigh*

DeVmarine In reply to DragonPress [2010-11-30 07:46:24 +0000 UTC]
firstly thanks for the compliment
The thing with scan lines is, they can line up perfectly but there is that millimeter gap which doesnt get scanned at all when you fold the paper, thats what really screws it and i try to fix it up abit in photoshop.
I used to work all the time on A4, but now...most of my stuff are on A3, you can include so much more details on it.

DragonPress In reply to DeVmarine [2010-11-30 07:51:01 +0000 UTC]
hehe,....i have a DIFFERENT problem as i couldn't fold mine - i had a life sized self portrait from college i had to scan in 3 parts - and because it was on a BOARD it 'raised up' making the edge on one side blur out ...thankfully i had some overlap in the scanner because it was *just* a little too big in two directions - but even with that, i couldn't get the bloody thing to line up right. if you look closely at the (OLD version) Self Portrait, i'm sure you could see it. depending on what size i uploaded it at. *wonders now....*
i don't use A4/A3 paper - how big are those ?
and your very welcome!

a4 paper are those standard printing paper you see everywhere, and A3 paper is twice as big as that.
