Description
The Troopers are hanging out at a pool.Karl Ziktor gets an idea to use computers in his latest plan.
He goes to Virtual Reality and talks with Icebot. Icebot tells him that he's developed a way to trap people inside computers.
Kaitlin and JB go to the newspaper and meet with Woody, who's getting really into a football computer game.
In virtual reality, Icebot tells Grimlord he's ready to trap someone in a computer. Grimlord orders him to trap JB.
At the newspaper, JB is indeed abducted by Icebot through his computer. Kaitlin witnesses it.
JB is held by bizarre lightning-like chains that drain his energy and channel it to Grimlord's drones.
Ryan is training with Tao, when suddenly Kaitlin runs in to tell him what happened.
They try to contact Professor Hart through the computer, but only Icebot appears on the screen. Ryan turns the computer off before anything can happen.
Three people enter the dojo, all wearing sunglasses. They're Skugs in disguise! They battle Ryan and Kaitlin, but they're no match for them.
Ryan and Kaitlin go to Hart's lab and ask Hart for help. They don't want to risk using a computer screen, so Hart has them use their VR Visors. Jeb wants to be included, so they give him one too.
They find JB's location and make a plan. Ryan will transform and let Icebot pull him through the computer. It works, Ryan makes it into Grimlord's dungeon. Ryan fights with the monsters there, and Grimlord teleports away. Ryan makes it to JB and they escape. The monsters follow them. JB hides, too weak to transform. Ryan takes in one of the monsters, Slashbot, alone. After a battle he defeats him and takes JB to the lab.
At the lab, Hart restores JB's energy.
This was a really good episode. I'd say it's even a standout among these early ones.
It does exactly what I've wished the last few episodes would do, dispense with the character lessons and just be a more straightforward adventure show.
There are no one-off side characters here to distract from the main focus. Grimlord's plan isn't just loosely inspired by something the Troopers are doing.
Grimlord's plan, while a hit confusingly explained initially, makes sense and works as a genuine threat. Why he doesn't continue to use it is a little strange. Maybe the monster, Slashbot, could've been the one with the ability to pull people through computer screens.
There are some nice character moments here, the Troopers, as well as Tao and Jeb hang out at a pool. Woody is being his usual goofy self getting far too invested in a football computer game.
There is a bit of odd editing in the scene where Ryan fights Grimlord's minions, Grimlord teleport away, but pops back in to order his monsters to follow Ryan after he escapes.
Kaitlin gets a bit left out, just stuck at the lab most of the second half of this episode.
Kaitlin and JB never transform, only Ryan this time. That's another element that stands out.
Despite a few weaker moments, I think this is one of the stronger episodes of VR Troopers.
