It can make that sound. I think it is echolocation, as the clips in the film say his species is a sentient subterreniean species.

I doubt that, there's not a lot of it's screeches in the movie.

Maybe their species' eardrums evolved to hear different wavelengths of sounds? Remember, aliens are limited of what our minds can think of, so I can't think of why it doesn't screech as much.

It being some what telepathic kinda killed the echolocation thing. Even on their planet it would just stick to telepathy for communication. So being on a planet of an inferior species, it wouldn't even bother with echolocation.
