Description Here's something I wanted to show off. So the top picture is the head of a Jirachi plush which I had tried to make back in February last year. At the time, I considered it somewhat weird looking although still potentially passable; nonetheless it bothered me so I decided to abandon the project. Now of course it looks completely off and unacceptable.

So what sorts of patterning breakthroughs did I achieve during the time? Back then since I was still somewhat new to pattern making, I used a few "naive" pattern-making methods, one of which was just taking a reference image (such as the official art) and simply tracing over the shape to achieve the desired pattern piece. So in this case, I found an official artwork of Jirachi, traced over the head, made a few minor adjustments, and then mirrored it for the other side. As you can see though that didn't work; the star points are at the wrong angles and the bottom of the head has a really weird shape which juts out.

What let me improve the pattern drastically? Unfortunately dA won't let me put images in my post so I'm gonna redirect you to my Tumblr post about this instead. It boils down to visualizing patterns in 3D and avoiding the complications which come with simply tracing over references.

Show me how to make it

I hope you dont mind but I used the pictures of your jirachi plush as a guide to make my patterns. All I mainly did was watched where you had stitches and drew them on a picture of Jirachi. I ended up doing the body a different way. Just wanted to let you know and say thanks man you were a big help, I'm still making test jirachi plushes to see where I need to change in the patterns but  your tutorials helped me me a lot too.

Of course it's no problem if you use my plush as a reference I do that all the time when I'm tackling projects I'm not sure how to do, haha. As long as you do your best to not flat out copy someone's pattern without adding your own personal flairs, it's all good. (Although truthfully if you could reverse engineer someone's plush just by looking at it, that'd be ridiculously impressive.) If you need any more insights feel free to ask!

When I made the test plush I was having trouble stitching it, I'm going to look online for tips to do that better but got any sewing tips?

You mean just like the straight stitching and ladder stitching and stuff? The internet's a good enough resource for that, I don't think I have any special sorts of tips, haha.

Did you make the 3d model yourself? The original pattern looked funny because pattern was based off the wrong shape?

That's actually the official model used in Pokemon X/Y; I downloaded it from a 3D model resource site and then viewed it on my computer. That's not the main reason the original was wrong though, it's because of relying too much on naive patterning. As in, just because you trace over a shape doesn't mean that the resulting plushie will have that shape, due to how stuffing causes the pattern piece to curve in 3D.

Love the tutorial on Tumblr, very informative, and you're skill really shows improvement from the old one until now. What 3D program are you using for your models?

Thanks a bunch, I'm super happy you found it useful! I wrote it up in like an hour so I was worried it was gonna be super verbose and rambly As for the models I download the available X/Y models here   and use Autodesk FBX Viewer (it's free) to view the model. Not all the Pokemon are available as models though in which case I just turn on my Pokemon game and manually take pictures in the in-game Pokedex.

Yup, sometimes it's hard to motivate myself to rework on failed projects, but I'm super glad you came along to motivate myself to work on this one! I didn't have time to make the Pokemon Time one but given that I have all the embroidery files and such I'm gonna try to carve out some time to actually make it. Then again I have some other projects I really want to get around to too... Ugh, if only I had discovered plush making like 2 years earlier.

I would love to see pictures when you finish! You've gotten really far for how long you have been doing it. You should really be proud.

Admittedly that first one had like one pattern test as far as I remember so it's probably not entirely fair to compare the two, but then again the fact that I was considering passing it off as OK, whereas today it would be considered unacceptable, I think that at least shows that my standards have certainly risen, haha.

yes that's definitely a sign! it happens with art/drawing too
i look back at some pieces that i thought were good, but now i think theyre embarrassing and horrible =w=
