'this man is always searching, looking, discarding…what is it that he is trying to find, that is so valuable to him that he can just throw the rest of the world away?’

This man is fishing for SOULS. And his mask, which serves as bait, is that fish. Oh yes.

I originally wanted to crop out his eyes (actually, the original didn't have the top inch or so) but the composition was so weird that I ended up adding the eyes. I think it lessens the understand of the fish being his mask, but oh well.

This piece had lots of new experiences for me, namely in coloring. I finally figured out how to add multiple colors and shades to a single object, like the jacket (pretty blues and greens and yellows and oranges...and greys). I also found this technique from my last fish piece (the comic) and applied it here. When using colored pencils, I found contrast really hard. So I outlined shadows and highlights with thin dark lines, and it helped make the contrast stand out. I used that here, a lot. I think it's more apparent in the jacket.

Those clouds and that water KILLED ME. I had no idea what I was doing. But then again...so did the fish, since my sketch was so rough I didn't even know what I was looking at half the time.

Yay for flying fish...it'll probably go on my business card for con.

thank you! I procrastinated on the water a lot because I was scared to work on it, but I guess I didn't have that much to fear after all. 8'D
