Description

Ported to OBJ from the SFC port by Darkdrone from the stock model included in the video game Star Trek: Shattered Universe (STSU).  Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS.  NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.

Another late TMP era development, Spectre was a large, two-man small craft designed as a long range fighter shuttle intended primarily for the CAP role (combat air patrol) for Federation shuttlecarriers.  That means they would be sent out to the extreme limit of a shuttlecarrier's scanning range and patrol there, looking for and immediately responding to any hostile threats, for as long as they could before their reliefs arrived and they could return to the carrier, they could get serviced and refueled while their pilots rested up, and then they would do it all over again.  In a combat situation these were normally treated as regular fighter shuttles, although their somewhat heavier weaponry than a standard Federation Swift or Peregrine gave them a decided dogfighting edge.  These were also used for long range recon scouts and often carried a belly pod with additional "special" electronics just for that role -- not as extensive a suite as that carried by an EW Phantom, but still quite impressive.  There were usually no more than one or two of these on the smaller Starfleet shuttlecarriers or stationed at major Federation bases and battle stations, no more than six (half a squadron) on the larger shuttlecarriers and most starbases, and only Starfleet super shuttlecarriers getting a full squadron of twelve along with the largest starbases, such as the Ournal type.  In almost all cases use of them was generally earned by the best pilots on hand at the ship captain's (or base commander's) discretion.  Spectre would serve with the Federation Starfleet from the late TMP era well into the post-TMP era before finally being retired.

This is semi-canon, as it comes from a Franchise licensed videogame; however, my rewritten backstory is fanon because the game was about the Mirror Universe (TOS "Mirror, Mirror," et al) and I had to rewrite accordingly for normal Trek multiverse threads.  You can take it or leave it and write up your own, and I'll understand completely.  After all, Trek's a multiverse.

Live long and prosper.

ASIDE 1 - In terms of TMP era Feddie fighters Spectre is the best, with Peregrine a close second and Swift (i.e. STSU's Wraith) a solid third.  Spectre's low numbers (given its high cost) limit its availability, however, which means you're not going to fill a Feddie shuttlecarrier full of them in its service time frame no matter how much you want if you play by the rules (a-hem).  On the other hand, Starfleet will make sure you have enough Peregrines for that and it's almost as good, so there you go.  It's kind of the same deal with the Cosmo Zero and Cosmo Tiger space fighters as used in the original Star Blazers, to draw a parallel.  Oh, and let's not forget that there's more than enough Swifts being made in the late TMP era for anything you want, so there you go.

ASIDE 2 - To draw a Vietnam War era analogy, this is your F-5A Vigilante and your Swifts and Peregrines are your F-8 Crusaders and F-4 Phantom IIs.  Not an exact analogy I know, but hopefully close enough.  Maybe we should nickname this "Big Bird" given its size and intended role, eh?  XD
