Description
A custom model by me for illustration purposes for my book Mandel's Fighting Starships I: Federation Fleet Review 2300-01 (FFR), and made using parts originally created by Rick "p81" Knox for the Starfleet Command (SFC) series of video games. Original TOS era Pompey class destroyer design by Todd Guenther, conjectured TMP era heavy scout conversion by me. Preview picture posed in XNALara XPS. NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.
When I was first putting together FFR I noted the lack of a real Class I TMP era heavy scout -- that is, a two-engined one instead of the various "panhandle" types (Hermes, Nelson, etc.). I felt that the earlier pre-TMP failed conversion of Monoceros (see separate entry) pointed the way to would have eventually been done in the TMP era; that is, conversion of an existing class using the full LN-64 based upgrade path, and yet there was no such class to convert ... or was there? This is where Timo Saloniemi's various musings came into play in my original FFR research, and after it was all done I settled on a TMP era heavy scout conversion of Todd Gunther's TOS era Pompey class heavy destroyers for filling that particular slot. They would have been ships without a purpose in the TMP era given all of the various Project Avenger conversions (nee Miranda for you canon types), not to mention the Menagha program (see separate entry), so I found one for them. Like what was eventually done in the TOS era with the old Detroyats in some multiverse threads in order to justify their continued existence, all surviving Pompeys got converted while receiving their full TMP era refits for the heavy scout role, a path whose way had already been opened by the earlier Monoceros linear warp heavy scout prototype conversion. The Pompey TMP conversion was fairly straightforward and followed its original TOS era lines save for the base where both of its warp engine pylons connected with the main hull dorsal. FYI this is where the phototorp module would be (either original 2-tube or later 4-tube) if this had remained a heavy destroyer), Instead, this is where I put a special custom hull module that both contained additional electronics for its new job and connections for various attachments, which could be hooked to it in sled-like fashion to further enhance Pompey's scout electronics suite. You can see some of these in the various Jackill's works -- extended sensor arrays, add-on ECM/ECCM modules, and so on. This gives the TMP era Pompey class heavy scout an extra customization feature that Monoceros never had and could never have, given the nature of her conversion; and it's also a feature lacking in all scout type "panhandles" save those specially modified for that (and there some images in Jackill's of this). BTW Pompey also gets the multi-bank upgraded phaser battery that was a standard feature of the LN-64 program, just like the single-engined upgraded Hermes and Nelson, although it never got photon weaponry since it needed the space for its special electronics suite (but it DID get one of those newfangled probe-and-drone launchers, see my entry on Nelson).
I hope Mr. Guenther isn't upset at me for this but I so wanted to include his Pompey in FFR and keep it as part of Starfleet in this time frame, given that it's one of the classic TOS fanon designs from back in the day, and yet I had to give it a good reason and new sense of purpose for still being around in the TMP era. Pompey's TMP era heavy scout conversion does this, as well as giving the rest of you a very good and versatile Feddie two-engined heavy scout class for almost the whole of the TMP era. I hope it fits the bill for all of you as well as it did me. Of course, if some of you would rather keep Pompey as (yet another!) TMP era Feddie heavy destroyer and do your own straight TMP era conversion, I understand perfectly and won't be offended. This is nothing more than what worked for me and worked very well at the time I was putting FFR together. What you do of course is entirely up to you.
Pompey in both her original TOS and later TMP era forms is fanon.
Live long and prosper.
ASIDE - I rejected the video game based Abbe scout conversion for inclusion in FFR at the time because it looked silly to me back then and still does. It also wouldn't come until the mid-TMP era at the earliest if you intend to use it anyway, but Pompey's conversion would be early in the TMP era since she's a pre-existing TOS class, like all the other early conversions.
