RMS Queen Mary was without doubt the most famous British large passenger liner of the World War II era, not to mention one of the largest and fastest in the world at that time. Built in the mid-1930s for the Cunard-White Star line, she was pressed into service by HM government and converted into a troop ship during World War II. She was one of the five largest British ocean liners used this way, and together they were known collectively as "the Monsters" due to their enormous troop carrying capacity. In fact Queen Mary still holds the world record for the most troops carried successfully during wartime (15,740), and together with the other Monsters their high speed (30+ knots) and zigzag ocean courses made it virtually impossible for Axis submarines to catch them. She also counted among her many wartime passengers no less a personage than Prime Minister Winston Churchill himself, who often traveled on her to visit Canada and the United States under the alias of "John W. Boutwood." After the war Queen Mary was refitted again for civilian passenger service and once again resumed plying the transatlantic ocean route until 1967, which she was officially retired. A private fundraising effort to save her from the breakers was successful in outbidding a Japanese ship scrapping firm, and she is now permanently moored at Long Beach, California as a combination museum ship, historic monument, and open tourist attraction. This is a straight port with no changes by me. It features the Queen Mary in her peacetime colors. If you want her in her wartime uniform grey paint job for troop ship use, as she appears (as the large troop ship or passenger liner) in Ubisoft's Silent Hunter series, then you will have to create your own custom textures and apply them yourself.
This is not my model. All I did was port it to OBJ for you. Please credit Erwin Welker as the original creator if you use this in any of your own 3D projects. You do not have to credit me for my part.
For non-profit, non-commercial use only.
TRIVA - RMS Queen Mary was involved in a wartime incident that would later sere as the basis for a famous disaster movie. In late July of 1943 during her record-breaking trip across the Atlantic, she was caught in a gale and was hit broadside by a wave that was almost 100 feet high (28 meters or so) that caused her to roll 52 degress and came very close to capsizing her (!!!). The incident was documented at the time, and would later serve as the inspiration for both the 1969 novel The Poseidon Adenture and the later 1972 Academy Award winning Irwin Allen movie that was made from it. The fictional S.S. Posiedon even looks like her inspiration, the real life Queen Mary, as depicted in the original 1972 movie.
