Description
Based on the Sparrowhawk as originally designed and created by Stephen V. Cole and the Amarillo Design Bureau (ADB) for the Star Fleet Battles (SFB) tabletop sci-fi war game. Ported from the fan-created model made for Activision's Starfleet Command (SFC) series of video games. NO MODEL DOWNLOAD.
You hardly ever see this anymore because it was so effectively supplanted and then replaced by the reversioned TNG-influenced take done for SFC and Klingon Academy (KA), but this is the original version of the Romulan Sparrowhawk class light cruiser. It was created back in the day because there was a dreadful lack of ships for the Romulans in SFB and ADB desperately needed something for them that would let them compete on a more even footing with the Federation, Klingons, and the Gorn. Yes, those are what look like two Klingon style warp engines embedded in the aft part of the hull because this was supposed to have been made as a hybrid of both Klingon and Romulan technology, being the first such new Romulan ship of its generation, and which I call the Hawk Generation in my own Trek tech fannish musings on the subject. It was very popular when it was first introduced back in the heyday of the Commander's Edition of SFB, and I remember buying the miniature to use myself because I thought it looked so cool. (grin) Anyway, the design variations, spin-offs, and so on for both the SFB original and later Taldren reinvented versions for KA/SFC are pretty much the same and they even share the same names for the most part even if they don't look the same. (chuckle) I will wax eloquent on what made the Sparrowhawk so revolutionary when it was first fielded by the Romulans during that magic two-and-a-half year period between the TOS and TMP eras when the time comes. It all started right here with the SFB TOS original, however, just so you'll know.
Live long and prosper!
NOTE - Those aren't Klingon warp engines embedded in the hull, BTW, although they look like them. They're actually interchangeable modules that let the Romulans customize their Sparrowhawks for whatever specialized purposes they need. The module outer casing is supposedly patterned after Klingon warp engine hull casings (the plans were handy due to the Klingon-Romulan alliance!) They're always installed in pairs (no mixing/matching) and they require significant yard time to change out, but it gives any Romulan starship class based on the Sparrowhawk hull (Firehawk, et al) a unique customizing capability. This feature was also carried over into the Taldren-redesigned TMP era version and its various spin-offs for the Klingon Academy and Starfleet Command series of games.
